Are you a current student in the School of Arts? Do you want to make a real difference on campus and beyond by ensuring the student voice is heard?
Our Chairs of School are the lead representatives of students at YSJ. You’ll work with students, University staff, and the SU team to resolve issues, encourage good practice, and enhance the learning experience for everyone in your School. You’ll also join the SU’s Student Leadership Group, working with Presidents and other Chairs to develop and deliver campaigns, projects, and activities to make student life at YSJ better for everyone.
Requirements
In order to apply for this role, you must fulfil all of the following requirements:
- Be a current student who is a member of the Students’ Union at York St John University at the point of appointment
- Be a current student between September 2026 and June 2027
- Be a student on a course within the School of Arts
In addition, we’re looking for students with:
- Excellent team working, organisation, and time management skills
- The ability to work on your own initiative
- Empathy when working with students of all ages and backgrounds
- Basic administration abilities (e.g. use of Microsoft Office)
- A commitment to equal opportunities, integrity, and the Students’ Union’s core values
Main Duties
As a Chair of School, you will:
- Represent your School community and the Students’ Union at University and SU meetings
- Lead the Course Reps in your School by attending training, delivering events, creating a monthly newsletter, and closing the feedback loop
- Gather and collate feedback from Course Reps to draw out themes
- Meet regularly with academic staff in your School to discuss feedback
- Be a member of the Student Leadership Group and a voting member of Student Council
- Lead on campaigns, projects, and research to help create meaningful change on campus
- Be an ambassador for the Students’ Union

Interviews:
The role of Chair of School will be democratically appointed via interview by students currently studying in your School. A member of SU staff will also be in attendance at the interview to support the process, but they will not be a voting member on the panel.

Interviews: Week commencing either 4th May 2026 or 11th May 2026
Training & Commencement of Role: September 2026
