Role Purpose
We are seeking a Café Assistant / Barista to deliver a day-to-day café service, welcoming visitors and a high quality food and beverage offer, plus support wider hospitality activity across activities, events and hires — supporting the Gallery’s values, community focus and Welsh identity.
Reporting to Hospitality Supervisor the Café Assistant / Barista will be responsible for making and delivering hot and cold drinks, cakes, pastries and snacks in a limited but well-curated product offer with exceptional customer service and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Customer Service & Front of House
- Deliver a warm, welcoming and efficient customer experience at all times, acting as a key point of contact for visitors to the café and Gallery.
- Take orders, handle payments, and engage positively with a wide range of audiences.
- Maintain a strong awareness of the Gallery’s wider offer, helping to signpost visitors to exhibitions, events and facilities.
Food & Beverage Preparation
- Prepare and serve high-quality coffee, drinks and light food in line with café standards.
- Operate coffee machines and equipment safely and effectively (training provided where required).
- Ensure consistency in presentation, quality and service speed.
Cleanliness & Stock Management
- Maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene across all café areas, including front of house, kitchen and storage spaces.
- Undertake regular cleaning duties, including tables, equipment and service areas.
- Support stock management by monitoring levels, restocking as needed, and alerting the Café Lead to low or depleted items.
- Assist with deliveries, storage and stock rotation.
Team Support & Collaboration
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
- Support the Café Lead in delivering an efficient and positive working environment.
- Be flexible and responsive to the needs of the team and the wider Gallery.
Events & Visitor Experience
- Support the delivery of events, private views and workshops, including set-up, service and clear-down.
- Contribute to creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that enhances the overall visitor experience.
- Represent the Gallery positively, contributing to its reputation as a high-quality cultural destination.
Compliance & Standards
- Follow all food hygiene, health and safety, and allergen guidance procedures.
- Undertake required training, including Level 2 Food Hygiene (if not already held).
- Ensure safe working practices at all times.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Experience in a café, hospitality or bar environment Customer-facing experience
- Experience of working within a small team
- Strong customer service and communication skills
- Reliable and flexible
- Positive attitude
Desirable:
- Barista experience
- Interest in arts/culture
- Coffee making training (or refresher provided)
- Food Hygiene Level 2 qualification (or training will be provided)
- Welsh language skills

Contract: Part-time 25 hours on offer (we are flexible and open to job-share and alternative part-time proposals)Salary: c. £17,485 per annum (equivalent to RLW p/h)Location: Oriel Myrddin, CarmarthenReports to: Visitor Experience Manager
