About the role

Ecclesiastical Insurance Canada, who are proudly part of Benefact Group, are looking for a Business Applications Specialist to join our Toronto office.

We’re looking for a Business Application Specialist/Developer to join our Business Solutions team. In this role, you’ll help develop, enhance, and maintain internal business applications used across the organization, working with both legacy systems and modern solutions. You’ll collaborate with developers, business analysts, and operational stakeholders to troubleshoot issues, build new interfaces, and improve overall user experience.

What you'll be doing 

  • Develop internal applications using a variety of tools and technologies such as Claris FileMaker, SQL Server, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS

  • Use UI/UX best practices to design and implement clean, intuitive, user-friendly solutions

  • Maintain and support legacy internal systems while contributing to modernizing application components over time

  • Build custom integrations and work with APIs and microservices to connect internal platforms and automate workflows

  • Participate and assist in code reviews, testing, debugging, requirements gathering, and documentation

  • Work closely with team members and business users to understand requirements and translate them into practical, usable, well-designed solutions

  • Support change requests, tickets, minor enhancements, and production fixes as needed

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of documentation, development standards, and coding practices

What you'll need to have

  • Formal education in Computer Science, Software Development, or equivalent training/experience

  • 1–2 years of related professional experience

  • Experience working with databases; FileMaker knowledge is an asset

  • Proficiency in SQL Server and writing SQL queries

  • Strong foundational skills in JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and web technologies

  • Basic UI/UX design capabilities, with the ability to interpret requirements and contribute to interface design

  • Comfortable working collaboratively in a team environment

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage priorities and handle multiple small tasks or work items

What makes you stand out

  • Demonstrated passion for purpose-driven work and contributing to meaningful initiatives

  • Experience with system integrations and working with RESTful APIs

  • Exposure to additional scripting languages beyond JavaScript (e.g., Python, PHP, etc.)

  • Familiarity with the .NET framework and related development environments

  • Experience working in the insurance or financial services sectors

  • Strong collaborative mindset with comfort in agile, team-based environments

We’re committed to transparency and fairness for this role; the base salary range is between $88,000 and $101,000. That’s just the base —the full package includes so much more! Actual pay depends on your experience, skills, and fit for the role. If this range isn’t quite what you had in mind, we’d still love to hear from you!
