BSL Performer for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Job Description

Please find the following information in BSL below.

We’re getting our access team ready for our summer musical, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Part of the access provision is 2 BSL performances, on Sun 12 Jul 2.30pm and Sat 8 Aug 2.30pm. On this occasion, due to the logistics of the large cast of children, we’re unable to offer these performances as BSL integrated, so they will be side-of-stage performances.

We are looking for 2 types of creative: consultant and performer. You are welcome to apply for both roles. Our theatre has an ethos of nurturing new talent, so it’s not essential that you’ve done this role before.

Performer

The BSL shows will be performed by a team of 2 sign performers, approximately alternating scene by scene. They also understudy for each other so if one person is unable to deliver their work, the access performance doesn’t have to be cancelled. One of the sign performers is in-house, and we are looking to cast the other performer. They can be hearing or deaf; we can work together to ensure good access support.

To apply, please write/video a short explanation of why you’d be right for this production, highlighting your experience of stage performing and song translation, and submit a video of you performing (details as follows):

  • These 2 contrasting songs give you an opportunity to showcase different character, musicality, and emotion. For any language that would need creating or checking with the consultant feel free to create a productive sign or just initialise with fingerspelling.
  • Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
  • Please perform your translation with the music playing, so you can keep pace with it.
  • Please don't worry about learning your translation by heart. You can refer to notes, pause, and so on. We're interested to see your creativity in translation and your ability to perform in a theatre setting (so imagine a full auditorium in front of you and give yourself plenty of signing space in your video framing).
  • Please upload your clips to YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox etc. and share the link with us as part of your application.

Please email your applicationto lixi@watermill.org.uk

If this isn’t for you but you’d like to be considered in the future for other projects, do email lixi@watermill.org.uk. Please do share our call-out so we can find the right team!
