Purpose of the role:
The role exists to bring professional expertise in the design and implementation of People, Learning and Culture strategies, including human resources management, organisational development, and learning and development.
The role supports the Executive, Board of Trustees and the People, Learning and Culture Committee by providing assurance on the adequacy and effectiveness of internal controls relating to HR policies, processes and procedures – covering areas such as professional development and performance management.

Main Responsibilities:
Provide professional insight and advice on People, Learning and Culture matters to strengthen organisational governance and decision - making.
Assist the Executive, Board of Trustees and the People, Learning and Culture Committee in reviewing and assuring the robustness of HR policies, processes and procedures.
Draw on wider professional or volunteer experience to contribute to the charity’s strategic leadership, ensuring responsible stewardship of resources.
Uphold the organisations’s mission in line with governance obligations, Charity Commission guidelines, and all relevant legislation.

Skills & Experiences:
Essential
▪ Professional experience in People, Learning and Culture functions , such as:
▪ Human resources management
▪ Organisational development
▪ Learning and development
▪ Ability to assess the adequacy of HR policies, processes and internal controls , including areas such as:
▪ Professional development & p erformance management
Strong strategic thinking and governance capability , with the ability to contribute to long - term organisational direction.
Sound judgement and analytical skills , particularly in evaluating risk, compliance and assurance.
Experience working at an executive or senior advisory level or contributing to board - level decision - making.
Ability to communicate clearly and constructively , both within committee settings and at full Board level.
Understanding of charity governance principles , including the responsible stewardship of resources and the duties of a trustee.
Desirable
▪ Experience in health, social care, or support services , especially where the work involves a Regulated Activity (as defined in the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 and amended by the Protection of Freedoms Act 2012).
Familiarity with safeguarding frameworks , regulated settings, or working with vulnerable adults or children.
▪ Knowledge of relevant employment legislation , and HR compliance standards
Previous trustee or non - executive experience , or experience volunteering in a governance capacity.
Additional Information:
DB S Checks & Suitability Checks : Trustee roles will require a Basic DB S check. We will require suitability checks prior to your start date with us.
Training & Support : Completion of the Hospice of the Valleys Trustee Induction Programme that will include self - guided training using materials curated by Hospice of the Valleys Board and Executive. Mandatory facilitated training sessions as required by the Board of Trustee and Executive.
Volunteer Expenses : Volunteers will be able to claim reasonable out of pocket expenses.
Policies & Procedures : Volunteers are expected to follow and adhere to all relevant policies.
