Context

This is an unpaid post for which you must have institutional support and your zoo/aquarium must be a BIAZA member. The post is within the Red Squirrel Focus Group (RSFG) which falls under The British & Irish Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s (BIAZA) Native Species Working Group (NSWG). As a member of the RSFG you will report to the RSFG Chair and NSWG Chair and Vice-chair.

RSFG Objectives

The objectives of the RSFG are to support those of the BIAZA NSWG and wider BIAZA objectives where relevant by:

  • Raising the profile of red squirrels across the BIAZA membership.
  • Providing guidance documents and training on red squirrel husbandry and care for BIAZA members.
  • Supporting and encouraging BIAZA members to engage in red squirrel conservation (both in-situ and ex-situ) and promote such projects internally and externally.
  • Maintaining communication between NSWG and other BIAZA working groups and the Conservation Committee (CC) where relevant.
  • Encouraging members to support evidence based adaptive site management (in conjunction with CC)

Working Group Member Role Description

RSFG members contribute to the objectives of the RSFG in the following ways:

  • Attending and contributing up to 4 annual, virtual RSFG meetings.
  • Attending and contributing to any in-person red squirrel workshops and/or the annual BIAZA Conservation Conference wherever possible/relevant.
  • Contributing to new resources and training initiatives wherever possible and assisting with responding to queries from BIAZA members and other interested parties.
  • Contributing to relevant campaigns and communications, e.g. articles for BIAZA’s website, social media, presenting at regional meetings etc.
