We’re looking for a friendly, reliable and well-organised Bar Manager to run the College Bar under the direction of the Steward (Front of House Manager). This role would be ideal for someone with bar or hospitality experience who enjoys working with students in a lively and welcoming environment. This is an eight-week fixed-term contract running from 27 April to 20 June 2026, paid at £15.50 per hour. You will work 12 hours per week over 3 4-hour shifts.

About the role

You will take day-to-day responsibility for the operation of the College Bar, leading a small team of casual staff and ensuring a safe, well-run and inclusive space for student social events and College functions.

Bar operations

  • Oversee the daily running of the Bar, ensuring a clean, safe and welcoming environment
  • Ensure compliance with licensing laws, health and safety requirements and College policies
  • Carry out line cleaning and monitor cleaning rotas
  • Support pricing, promotions and basic marketing, with guidance from the Steward

Stock and cellar management

  • Manage stock levels, ordering and restocking
  • Maintain accurate stock records
  • Handle barrel changes, cellar gases and basic cellar maintenance

Team supervision

  • Recruit, train and supervise casual bar staff
  • Prepare weekly rotas that ensure efficient and cost-effective shift cover
  • Check and sign off timesheets
  • Ensure staff follow College policies and licensing procedures

Events and support

  • Plan and run the bar for student social events, bar nights and College functions
  • Liaise with student representatives and College colleagues to support the smooth running of events

Compliance and administration

  • Maintain accurate records of stock, rotas and shifts
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, including GDPR and licensing regulations
  • Report maintenance or equipment issues promptly

What we’re looking for

Essential

  • Experience working in a bar or similar hospitality setting
  • Ability to supervise and lead staff during shifts
  • Strong understanding of licensing laws and bar operations
  • Good organisational and time management skills
  • Confident communication skills and a proactive attitude
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends
  • Willingness to hold a Personal Licence
  • Comfortable using IT systems, including Excel and POS/till systems
  • Good level of fitness, as the role involves manual handling

Desirable

  • Previous supervisory or management experience
  • Knowledge of beers, wines and other bar products
  • Experience in a college, university or student-focused environment
  • Experience managing promotions and bar events
