Assistant Verger (Part-time)
St Ann’s Church, Manchester City CentreSalary: £10,491 per annum, pension contribution, uniform provided

St Ann’s Church is seeking a reliable and committed Assistant Verger to work closely with the Head Verger, clergy and staff team in supporting the life and mission of this busy city-centre church. The role is central to maintaining the security, dignity and readiness of the building as a place of worship and prayer, a welcoming space for visitors, and a well-run venue for services, civic occasions and events. This is a part-time post of approximately 15 hours per week, normally worked on Mondays and Tuesdays, with some occasional evening and weekend work and cover for staff leave by agreement. The role reports to the Head Verger.

The Assistant Verger will help ensure that the church is open, safe and hospitable, acting as key-holder and duty manager. Duties include supporting daily worship, caring for liturgical furnishings and sacred spaces, coordinating welcome and hospitality, assisting with events, cleaning and tidying, and adhering to health and safety procedures. The role involves practical work, collaboration with volunteers and colleagues, and regular engagement with members of the public, requiring tact, calm judgement and the delivery of a genuine welcome. Ability to carry out some physical duties (e.g. moving and arranging light items of furniture etc.) is required.

This post carries an Occupational Requirement under the Equality Act 2010 (Schedule 9) and is therefore open to active communicant members of the Church of England, or members in good standing of a Church recognised by Churches Together in England. The successful applicant will be willing to participate fully in the worshipping life of the church and to undertake relevant training. Appointment is subject to a satisfactory Enhanced Plus DBS check.
