Assistant Director of Music

WESTMINSTER SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP AND BURSARY FUND
Westminster
Full-time
Listed today

Westminster Under School is a friendly and welcoming place to work, with a real sense of community. Staff members quickly become part of the rhythm of life, both inside and outside the classroom. Social events are regular and varied, with plenty of opportunities to socialise outside working hours. All are encouraged to embrace the School’s day-to-day activities, whether that be attending a concert or a sports fixture.

It is a particularly exciting and significant time to be joining Westminster. As part of Westminster Under School and Westminster School’s move to become fully co-educational, girls will be joining the Under School for the first time in September 2026, at the 7+ and 11+ entry points, and a brand new pre-prep will open for boys and girls at the 4+ entry point. In September 2028, girls will be joining at 13+ at Westminster School.

Music has always been an important part of life at Westminster Under School. Pupils are encouraged to learn and participate as fully as possible in a weekly routine which is full of rehearsals, recitals, and concerts. Nearly all pupils learn at least one instrument and play to a high standard, with many performing in ensembles such as the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain, the National Children’s Choirs of Great Britain and Junior Departments of the four London Music Colleges. The department enjoys an excellent reputation for the quality and diversity of music created through its choirs, orchestras, jazz and wind bands, chamber music groups, and occasional stage musicals. The School offers Music Scholarships at 11+, and an impressive number have taken up music awards at 13+ at Westminster, Eton, Winchester and St Paul’s, amongst others. Our location, close to the South Bank and West End, encourages our pupils to attend concerts and recitals in order to expand their musical horizons.

The role
Westminster Under School is looking for an Assistant Director of Music to support and inspire this curiosity in pupils. The Assistant Director will also help promote and record Music Department events in newsletters, school magazines and on the School’s intranet pages.

The successful applicant will be a passionate and enthusiastic musician, and an engaging and creative classroom practitioner. They will have a varied musical background and hold a 2:1 honours degree in BMus/BA (or equivalent), be competent on the piano and preferably on one other instrument also, and will have experience teaching music to prep school-aged children. Applications are welcomed from experienced teachers or those new to the profession. The postholder will contribute fully to both the academic and the many co-curricular sides of the department’s activities.
