Big C is seeking a detail-oriented numbers enthusiast to join our Corporate Services team as an Assistant Accountant. In this hands-on role, you’ll play a key part in keeping our finances accurate, up to date, and compliant, helping the charity make informed decisions across the organisation.

About the role

In this hands-on role, you’ll maintain Big C’s financial and management accounting systems, ensuring records are accurate, up to date, and compliant. You’ll also line manage our Accounts Assistant, providing guidance and support to help deliver a high-performing finance function. You’ll work closely with managers and budget holders, helping them make informed decisions through clear, timely reports, budgets, and forecasts.

We’re looking for someone with strong accounting knowledge – part-qualified (CIMA, ACA or ACCA), Level 4 AAT or with equivalent experience – who’s confident using Excel and accounting systems. You’ll be proactive, organised, and have a keen eye for detail, with experience in supervising or line managing colleagues. If you enjoy problem-solving, collaborating with a small team, and ensuring financial processes run like clockwork, this is the role for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Line management of the Accounts Assistant, providing guidance, support, and development opportunities
  • Lead on the production, analysis, and reporting of management accounts, budgets, forecasts, and restricted funds to support informed financial decision-making
  • Maintain accurate financial records, including reconciliations, fixed assets, VAT, cashflow, and income/expenditure transactions
  • Ensure compliance with finance policies and procedures, providing advice and support to staff and volunteers as needed
  • Provide operational cover for the Director of Corporate Services and support the development of financial systems, processes, and the charity’s overall financial strategy
