ALN Nursery Assistant
The role as an ALN Nursery Assistant, you will provide 1:1 or small group support for young children with additional learning needs.
Key responsibilities include:
- Implementing Person Centred Planning (PCPs)
- Assisting with personal care (feeding/toileting)
- Fostering social skills
- Ensuring a safe, inclusive learning environment.
You will assist the Senior Nursery Practitioner and the Nursery Supervisor/Deputy in the day-to-day running of the nursery, providing a stimulating and varied programme of play and learning opportunities. You will be expected to safeguard and support the childrens wellbeing at all times and follow the nursery policies and procedures. You will contribute to planning and will conduct observations recording the learning of the children. You may also be responsible for a key worker group which you will develop good relationships with and support their development and learning, as well as documenting their learning progress. You will liaise and communicate with parents as required, particularly the ones in your key group and may be asked to take part in parent consultations. When working within the nursery you will assist with the preparation and maintenance of the equipment and work closely with the staff as well as attending regular staff meetings.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Provide 1:1 support for children with ALN and complex needs and support play and learning activities in line with set targets.
- Liaise with other agencies and professionals and attend PCP and school entry planning meetings as appropriate.
- Interact, supervise and keep the children safe and happy as well as contributing to the work of the nursery team.
- Assist in the provision of a wide variety of activities for the children; establish productive working relationships with the children, acting as a role model and setting high expectations. Actively encourage children's progress in all areas of development and types and stages of play through interaction and the extension of play activities.
- Encourage all children to interact and work/play cooperatively with others and engage all children in activities.
- Share the responsibility for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all the children.
- Always ensure that the nursery environment is kept safe, secure, clean, warm and welcoming.
- Contribute to planning, record keeping, and group activities in the base room as appropriate.
- Have a key worker group with responsibility for their learning and assessments e.g. learning journey paperwork and next steps as well as supporting all other children in the nursery.
- Assist in the setting up and clearing away of all activities and equipment; organise appropriate learning environment and resources for play sessions. Select and prepare resources to take account of the childrens interests, language and cultural background.
- Manage resources effectively and ensure classrooms are left tidy and ready for the next session.
- Ensure that the nursery is maintained to the highest possible standard at all times with the highest possible standards of hygiene and safety.
- Prepare and serve childrens snack as required.
- Assist children with personal independence including toileting.
- Support the work and beliefs of the management committee by helping to create an inclusive environment that promotes open and equal opportunities for all the children and adults. Encourage the participation and involvement of parents of children attending the group.
- Attend staff and planning meetings as requested.
- Attend training as requested for legal obligations and CPD.
- Ensure that any information received concerning the children is always kept confidential and to report and discuss with the Supervisor or Senior Nursery Practitioner any observations or personal insight appropriate to a childs welfare and development.
- Adhere to the policies and procedures at Hopscotch Nursery and work within the relevant legislation and within the guidelines of the National Minimum Standards, CIW and ESTYN.
- Support the Charity (nursery) with fundraising activities that may fall outside normal working hours e.g. Christmas/Summer/Easter fetes and sports day refreshments.
Monday and Tuesday 8.45-3.15. Additional cover hours may be available.
