BF Adventure was established 35 years ago and has developed a 60-acre activity site together with a highly skilled team to deliver flexible programmes of inclusive, adventurous outdoor activities for children, young people, and their families.

Role Summary and accountabilities

This is a senior operational leadership role overseeing the day-to-day running of Via Ferrata Cornwall CIC and BF Adventure, with responsibility for managing staff, apprentices, rotas, training, recruitment, programmes, budgets, and customer experience. The post requires a highly organised and proactive outdoor professional with strong leadership skills, extensive activity and safety knowledge, and the ability to maintain high standards across delivery, facilities, and team performance while supporting the wider goals of the organisation.

Role Summary and Accountabilities:

This role is a senior level position and is the operational lead for both Via Ferrata Cornwall CIC (VFC)and BF Adventure (BFA). This role is reportable to the Operations Manager with the expectation that they will operate autonomously and have full accountability within their field of responsibility.

The candidate should be very experienced with both the delivery of outdoor activities and in group leadership and management.

The L6 Manager will:

Oversee day-to-day operations across VFC and BFA, maintaining high standards of delivery, safety and customer experience.

• Lead, organise and motivate coordinators, delivery staff, apprentices and seasonal teams.

• Support recruitment, training, rotas, holiday and sickness planning to meet operational needs.

• Design, support and deliver programmes and courses for VFC and BFA clients when required.

• Manage budgets, financial targets and role-specific KPIs, aiming to exceed customer expectations.

• Attend senior management meetings as required and maintain a professional approach at all times.

Job Description:

Staff and training

• Recruitment – plan, oversee and lead on the recruitment of apprentices and delivery staff including freelancers to meet operational needs. This role will work along side the relevant HR manager / lead

• Training – plan, oversee and lead a full training programme for the adventure centre team to meet the operational needs

• Line management and regular supervisions – to ensure everyone has regular supervisions and to carry out supervisions where required

• Rota planning across BFA Group and VFC delivery – ensure that staff rotas and activity planning is carried out well in advance

• Monitor/Observe staff to ensure safe sessions are being taught and customer expectations exceeded – to actively feed into the observation system carried out by duty managers

• Listen and respond to staff and client feedback

• Lead / contribute to coordinator meetings every 2 weeks

Equipment and facilities

work with operations manager to:

• Prepare a full replacement plan for equipment

Ensure all equipment is used safely

• Maintain good levels of equipment

• Supply or plan training to cover usage of equipment

• Ensure that facilities are kept in safe working order

Programme, courses and finance

Work with and manage the booking coordinator to:

• Prepare bookings and courses in advance

• Ensure all bookings are managed to the highest level

• Meet finical targets for BFA and VFC

• Develop strategies to maximise income levels

Support the operation manager to prepare annual budget plan for delivery including staffing and facilities

Delivery and customers

• Ensure that all delivery is safe for staff and customers

• All delivery is to a high standard

• Staff are actively monitored and feedback

• Ensure all customers have 5-star experience

• Respond to all customer feedback professionally

Other:

Due to the varied and ever-changing nature of operations at VFC & BFA you may be required to undertake additional roles, responsibilities and tasks* as necessary to facilitate the smooth running of activities

Person Specification

Summary

Suitable applicants need to be energetic and proactive and have a passion for adventure and the outdoors. Being organised and having a good level of attention to detail are critical as managing staff and programmes is an essential part of the role.

Suitable applicants will need to develop excellent working relationships with delivery staff, senior management and other departments within the BF Adventure charity and as such must be able to communicate effectively with all parties.

Experience

• Wide Ranging Outdoor activity qualifications including climbing, paddle sport and land-based qualifications

• 5 years or more of outdoor activity and/or Youth work experience

Experience in mentoring / supervision

• Experience in establishing and maintaining admin systems

Experience within a senior role

• Management of a commercial operation, ideally in management

• Experience of school residential programmes, ideally in management

Essential Skills and Qualifications

• Have excellent IT skills including Microsoft 365

• Have excellent leadership abilities

• Have excellent planning and management skills

Hold a current, clean driving licence

• BCU Level 1 coach

• SPA / RCI or CWI

Current First Aid

• IT literate and competent in Microsoft programmes

• At least one other higher level or additional NGB award

• Organised and effective at complex programme management

• Commitment to personal development

• Anticipates, understands and responds to the needs of clients and volunteers.

Desirable Skills and Qualifications

• PTTLS or teaching qualification or equivalent

• Hold a D1 entitlement on their driving licence

• A commitment and enthusiasm for the vision of The BF Adventure (Staff Success factors) and high standards of service provision.

• Develops new and innovative ways to improve operations of the organisation

• Archery GB leader

• BC trainer

First Aid trainer and Assessor

• PPE inspection certificate

• Experience in staff training

• H&S qualifications

• Good handy man skills

• ERCA traditional / adventure park / rescuer qualifications / experience

• SPA/RCI or ERCA qualification or relevant site-specific training or high access qualifications

• Experience with rescues at height
