We’re looking for applicants for the next Calleva Assistant Conductor Competition, a two-day event with Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at its home venue, Lighthouse, Poole. The winner becomes the BSO’s next Calleva Assistant Conductor.
The 12-month role is the perfect platform to launch a professional career: you’ll assist guest conductors and work with the Orchestra’s artistic team, which includes Chloé Van Soeterstède, David Hill, Kirill Karabits and the opportunity to be mentored by Chief Conductor, Mark Wigglesworth. You’ll conduct the full orchestra in professional performances and direct smaller chamber-scale ensembles in a range of settings, from music education to creative health and wellbeing.
The Calleva Assistant Conductor programme is funded in 2024-30 by The Calleva Foundation, in memory of Jack Butt.
Up to twelve candidates will be invited to audition with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra on
Monday 27 April and Tuesday 28 April 2026, with a possible piano round on Sunday 26 April 2026.
Duties of the Calleva Assistant Conductor include:
- Assisting staff and guest conductors, conducting off-stage if necessary, and general assistance.
- Conducting items within a concert programme, or full concert programmes at the Company’s discretion. The Calleva Assistant Conductor may be asked to stand in and replace scheduled conductors at short notice.
- Conducting Schools, Family and Ensemble concerts.
- Working closely with our BSO Participate department.
- Being available to assist in the Concerts Department as required.
A group of musicians from the Orchestra will offer feedback and advice during the successful candidate’s time as the BSO Calleva Assistant Conductor.
The appointment will start on Tuesday 1 September 2026 for a period of 12 months, with possibility of extension for an additional 12 months. The competition is open to entrants who are 35 or below on 1 September 2026.
The Assistant Conductor is expected to attend rehearsals, concerts and recording sessions. For further information about the Orchestra’s pattern of work please enquire before entering.

The role:

Where will I be working?
Norman Mount is a purpose built house in the BD2 area of Bradford; the house is home to four adults with a learning disability who are supported to live as independently as possible in their home.
This role is for 1-1 support for a lady at Norman Mount for community support and will include supporting her to access activities she enjoys locally, supporting her with her eating/drinking and continence support.
We endeavour to create positive family relationships offering a good circle of support. There is a strong focus on supporting individuals' lives in a person centred way which includes various activities, shopping, managing own budgets and cooking. We tailor our services to enable people to be as independent as possible.
Training and Development
We offer training to all those who want to develop their skills and competencies not just in the care sector but in other areas too.
- Level 2 and 3 Lead Adult Care Worker
- Level 3 Operational Team Leader
Please note training will be offered after your probation period ends which is 6 months. Once you begin your training with us you will have your own coach who will support you through your programme.
Shift Patterns
Please note that you would be required to work 4hrs per day, across 5 days. Overtime will also be an option at this service.
Role Responsibility
What will I be doing?
This is a hands-on job in which no two days are the same. Your duties will include:
- promoting the independence of people we support
- supporting a full range of daily activities including cleaning and cooking, days out or going away on holiday
- arranging activities in the home and in the local community
- developing residents' life skills and personal interests
- helping residents stay safe and healthy
- assisting with personal care needs
- manual handling
- supporting people with medication including creams and lotions
- ensuring record keeping is maintained to the required standard at all times and contributing to service monitoring requirements.

What skills and qualities do I need to have?
Whilst knowledge of learning disabilities and complex needs would be beneficial, it isn't essential. What is essential is that you are:
- passionate, caring and enthusiastic
- flexible, patient and non-judgemental
- a great team player with lots of energy
- able to demonstrate good communication skills
- able to complete the physical aspects of the role such as manual handling where needed
