National Museums Scotland is currently looking for volunteers to help support our February Half Term events as part of our Family Programme at The National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.
We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic and friendly individuals to join our Learning & Engagement team as one-off event volunteers.
What’s involved?
Volunteers will help support our LEGO, puzzle and object handling activities for participants of all ages.
If you are good with people and like to get stuck in in a lively setting, this could be perfect for you. You can sign up for a mornings or afternoons across the week to suit your availability.

You must be over 18 to volunteer at this event.

The Role
Thomas Edward Mitton House, part of Brainkind provides care and support for up to 16 people who have acquired brain injury and have a range of cognitive, physical and/or emotional symptoms following their brain injury.
We will train you to provide personalised support to our adult residents. You will follow individual support plans to meet the needs and aspirations of each person. The focus is developing independent living skills: personal hygiene, meal preparation, exercise, leisure activities, socialising – the daily routine of regular life.
It is a really varied job, with all kinds of different activities to organise and participate in – both at TEM House and in the local Milton Keynes community: art, crafts, music, sports, gardening, shopping, swimming, and countless others.

The Role
This role is based in Redford Court/Lodge, a 29-bed Service in Liverpool, the 29 beds are split over two buildings in a small cul-de-sac the main unit has 24 beds, 20 of which as flatlets and 4 self-contained flats, opposite this is a 5-bed unit Redford Court Lodge. Both provide rehabilitation to people with an acquired brain injury. It is a unique community where the people we support can address their cognitive, behavioural, physical, and emotional difficulties.
Last year, the average length of stay was 12 weeks. Redford Court also provides a continuing rehabilitation service for those with longer term needs, this addition to the service is facilitated by Redford Court Lodge
You will be trained on how best to provide personalised support to our service users. You will follow individual support plans to meet the needs and aspirations of each person. The focus is developing independent living skills: personal hygiene, meal preparation, exercise, leisure activities, socialising – the daily routine of regular life. Were service users have identified physical needs staff are required as needed, to provide hands on personal care which will involve bathing and attending to the individual's care on their behalf. All activities of this nature are fully assessed by Occupational therapists and physiotherapist depending on need, staff are then supported to follow guidance produced by the therapists with full involvement of the service user.
It is a really varied job, with an array of activities to organise and participate in – both at Redford Court/Lodge and in the local Liverpool community: art, crafts, music, sports, gardening, shopping, swimming, and countless others. The unit is a 20-minute bus drive from Liverpool city centre and the Albert dock.

You will have an allocated caseload of tenants who you will support for the agreed contractual hours within their accommodation with the aim of supporting them to eventually move onto independent living. This is achieved by completing a support plan and risk assessment with the service user which consists of achievable goals within a realistic timeframe.
The service users we support have multiple complex needs and reside in shared and single occupancy accommodation. We take a multi-agency approach to ensure the most comprehensive amount of support is provided for the tenants needs. Our priority is to build a positive working relationship with the individual, this is the foundation of working within a psychologically informed environment (PIE) and Trauma Informed way.
Target is a collaborative organisation and have several office locations where you can access additional guidance from colleagues and management.
Working hours are generally 9am to 5pm with a 20-minute unpaid lunch break.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Main Purpose
To provide high quality housing and support services to residents in order to assist them to sustain their tenancies.
Specific tasks
- Assist residents when moving in, or out of Target accommodation.
- Assess the circumstances, aspirations and needs of each resident in order to make a support plan that is relevant to the resident and realistic in its achievement.
- Act as residents’ keyworker offering advice and support to negotiated and agreed support planning to enable them to develop their skills for independent living.
- Assist residents to maximise their income and to manage their personal budgets.
- Support residents to understand their rights and responsibilities under their occupancy agreements.
- Support and motivation to residents encouraging them to achieve personal goals.
- Carry out regular resident risk assessment and ensure it is properly recorded and copied to relevant officers in the organisation.
- Review support plans periodically and adapt them according to changing needs
- Make sure residents pay the rent due to Target Housing as required by the occupancy agreement. Assist residents with their benefit claims where necessary.
- Monitor residents’ handling of Target Housing property and consumption of gas & electricity.
- Monitor residents’ compliance with their occupancy agreements. Inform Service Manager who will then act to resolve non-compliance issues.
- Monitor occupancy to ensure that properties have not been abandoned or damaged and take prompt action when it happens to avoid unnecessary costs to TH.
- Where appropriate, help residents with budgeting. Negotiate with other bodies on behalf of the resident on the repayment of arrears such as rent owed to the Local Authority Housing Department.
- Liaise with the Probation Service and any other appropriate bodies to ensure that all are aware of relevant information.
- Enable and support the service user to deal with conflict and disputes amongst service users and between service users and neighbours.
- Assist in the delivery and development of resident activities.
- Keep all prescribed records in order that the value of the tenant support service can be audited and comply with confidentiality policy.
- Build links with external organisations, to maintain constructive working relations and to ensure resident’s needs are met.

ABOUT US-
Challengers is a voluntary sector organisation providing play and leisure services to disabled children and young people across Surrey, Hampshire and in Richmond, Kingston, and Chichester.
Our 555 Service offers urgent support to families of disabled young people aged 5 – 18 who are currently out of education. This may be due to awaiting a suitable school placement, because the young person has been excluded, or because their current school place cannot provide the appropriate support. We offer a fun, safe space at Challengers during the day where our highly trained staff help young people build their confidence, and prepare them for a successful return to school.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES –
- Being a part of the 555 Project Team to provide a high quality, fun and friendly service for young people aged 5-18 years, some of which may be extremely vulnerable and may have been excluded from school setting. This may mean that they may show behaviour that challenges.
- Assisting the scheme Manager and Deputy in all aspects of caring and supervision of children and young people who attend Challengers– encouraging and supporting children to fully realise their abilities and providing a safe and happy play environment.
- To conduct yourself and represent the Charity in a manner which reflects all the values and principles of The Challengers Approach and always being an advocate for disabled children and young people at all times, including on social media.
- To provide all aspects of one-to-one, two-to-one or three-to-one care, personal, medical and intimate care, manual handling tasks and positive behaviour support for the young people who attend. This includes toileting, feeding and ensuring all care needs are met.
- To support in delivering fun and inspiring ‘play’, by setting up structured activities and encouraging ‘free play’ amongst the groups. This includes doing out in the community with a young person to support in developing life skills.
- You are expected to prepare yourself for the day by reading the children’s information sheets and care plans as well as completing some administrative tasks when required to support the Manager and Deputy. This can include supporting in sharing of information prior to a meeting.
- To ensure that the children and young people at 555 are supported physically and emotionally as required. The children and young people we work with are often in difficult and stressful situations and you will need to support them, showing appropriate physical and emotional affection at all times.
- To communicate with confidence and willingness to build relationships with different stakeholders – your team and children and young people are essential, but you will also need to build rapport with and share information with Parents at handover times when required.
- To work as part of a team – this includes communication, sharing information and passing on your skills to the team; As well as physical team work such as setting up the site, cleaning at the end of the day, running activities and supporting colleagues with physical tasks.
- To support the team to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act (information and training available from Challengers). Assisting the team at all Challengers venues and sites to maintain a clean, tidy, secure site – treating and using buildings, structures, toys and equipment with respect and care. Background and overall purpose of the role:
The Volunteer Management team is responsible for embedding an organisational approach to volunteer engagement which enables volunteers to feel inspired, valued, supported, and connected to the charity, where they are a vital part of our community.
The Volunteer Coordinator plays a significant part in contributing to the success of the team in coordinating key parts of the ‘volunteer journey’ (recruiting, induction, training, supporting, and retaining volunteers). Of equal importance is influencing colleagues and providing advice and guidance whilst building collaborative working relationships with key stakeholders. The role is vital to establishing good practice in volunteer involvement, developing a culture of positive engagement and raising the profile of volunteering internally and externally.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Relationships, teamwork and collaboration
- Build strong relationships and collaborate with key stakeholders across the charity to identify and implement ways to enrich the volunteer experience, maximise the volunteer opportunities and strengthen the volunteer infrastructure.
- Work collaboratively with teams that manage volunteers to provide good practice advice and guidance on effective volunteer supervision.
- Promote a positive culture of engagement that values, embeds, and promotes the work of volunteers both internally and externally.
- Take a proactive approach to understand external events and initiatives taking place across the charity, providing advice, guidance and support on the requirements for successful volunteer involvement.
Communication, resources and training
- In conjunction with the Volunteer Manager, coordinate the review, development and implementation of robust practices and procedures associated with all aspects of the volunteer journey.

- Lead on the upkeep of volunteering information on internal communication channels, ensuring all relevant policies, reference materials and documents are made available and kept up to date.
- Contribute to the production and distribution of resources for volunteer-involving events, including, but not limited to recruitment, onboarding, and training materials.
Administration, customer service and delivery
- Provide high-level customer service throughout the volunteer journey; contributing to recruitment, induction, training, support, retention and exit of volunteers in line with our values and strategy.
- Acting as a key point of contact for the import, maintenance and integrity of volunteering data, working with colleagues to ensure accuracy, validity and reliability that reflects volunteer contribution and delivers reliable insights.
- Coordinate the administration volunteer recruitment and selection process to foster an environment that promotes equality, diversity and inclusivity and ensure a fair and consistent approach is followed.
- Act as the first port of contact for internal and external enquiries, coordinating the shared volunteer email inbox.
