What does this role involve?
This role is a vital part of a targeted health inequalities project aimed at improving access to preventative health care for people with learning disabilities. You’ll work directly with individuals and families while collaborating with Primary Care, community organisations, and public health partners.
A key element of this project is the guidance and oversight of a Steering Group made up of:
- Primary Care and statutory partners
- Voluntary, community, and faith-based organisations
- And most importantly, people with lived experience of learning disability or caring responsibilities
The Steering Group will support you and the wider project to ensure all activity is shaped by real voices, reflects local priorities, and remains accountable to the communities it serves.
Key responsibilities.
Community Engagement & Outreach
- Work directly with individuals with a learning disability, their families, and carers to promote awareness and understanding of Annual Health Checks.
- Deliver inclusive sessions in community venues, day services, support hubs, and public spaces.
- Provide one-to-one support and peer-informed outreach to build trust and increase confidence in using health services.
Promotion, Accessibility & Awareness Campaigns
- Co-design accessible promotional materials (including Easy Read, visuals, and digital content).
- Promote AHCs through outreach events, local media, social media, and community champions.
- Ensure messaging is tailored to meet the cultural and communication needs of diverse communities.
Partnership Development
- Build and maintain strong working relationships with:
- Primary Care stakeholders, including GPs, practice staff, PCNs, and Learning Disability Health Facilitators.
- Statutory agenciessuch as ICBs, NHS community teams, and local authorities.
- Voluntary, community and faith-based organisationswho can support wider engagement.
- Facilitate aligned working and shared campaigns to ensure consistent and inclusive messaging.
Steering Group Collaboration
- Work closely with the project Steering Group, participating in regular meetings and using their insights to shape project delivery.
- Ensure people with lived experience have genuine input into the project’s planning, materials, and evaluation.
- Act as a conduit for feedback between the Steering Group and wider community voices.
Monitoring, Learning & Impact
- Record engagement activity, participant data, and feedback using agreed tools.
- Collect real-life stories, examples, and case studies to demonstrate impact.
- Contribute to written reports, dashboards, and presentations for funders, partners, and internal use.
Support evaluation and reflective learning to inform future delivery.

Desirable
- Experience working in or alongside Primary Care, social prescribing, or community health.
- Knowledge of Annual Health Checks and the UK primary care system.
- Experience of working with or supporting a project steering group or advisory panel.
- Lived experience of disability, or experience of caring for someone with a learning disability or autism.
- Full driving license and access to a car, and willingness to commute across the designated geographical area (desirable), plus willingness to obtain business insurance.

Bake-Off Activity Volunteer

Our organised activity groups give people with additional needs the chance to make friends, enjoy social time together and try out a variety of activities. These fun and friendly groups help to improve physical health and mental wellbeing and increase life skills.
We are looking for friendly volunteers who can support our weekly Bake-Off activity. Citizens join us for a group cooking and baking session where they learn to bake biscuits, cakes, tray bakes and much more, to eat and take home.
We would love volunteers who can use their baking skills to show our citizens simple recipes they can try, encourage them to take part and ensure everyone has a great time.
What would I be doing?
- Using your baking skills to help our citizens make a variety of biscuits and cakes.
- Helping people to take part in basic cooking and baking activities (measuring ingredients and following recipes)
- Encouraging people to feel part of the group and take part in the activities.
- Helping to set up equipment and tidy away at the end of the session.
- Helping to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
What do I need?
- Basic cooking/baking experience
- An interest in helping people, being approachable and friendly
- Good communication skills
- Accepting of others who might be different to you and the ability to work as part of a diverse team
- A willingness to learn and work within guidelines set out by Midland Mencap

The Bake Off session is usually once a week for 2-3 hours (Wednesday mornings 10am-12pm)

Evening Social Activities Volunteer

We are looking for friendly and enthusiastic volunteers for our busy and chatty social groups in Weoley Castle. You will be encouraging our citizens to take part and ensure everyone has a great time.
This is a great opportunity to volunteer in a friendly, person-centred team, providing leisure and social activities for young people and adults with learning disabilities.
What would I be doing?
We have a variety of roles involving key tasks and providing friendship support:
Monthly Discos
Set in our own Community Centre where we have a reception, licensed bar and café. Our volunteers support in the bar with serving drinks and at times help the café with service and general help, as well as supporting us in welcoming people at reception and registering them. There is also a chance to DJ if you have the confidence!
At our social opportunities we really want everyone to feel welcome, included and to have a great time, and so we need friendly people to engage with our citizens, chatting and helping them to get involved and have fun.
Dynamo Club
Is a weekly evening social group for adults who get together either in our Community Centre or go out into the community. Volunteers support in engaging with individuals, taking part with and helping to deliver fun games and activities such as youth club style games/projects/art/quizzes/baking etc. We also go out on trips to the cinema/pub meals/live music/bowling etc where volunteers support staff to host inclusive outings!
- Helping people to take part in various activities.
- Supporting people to enjoy social trips such as bowling, cinema and meals out.
- Encouraging people to feel part of the group and take part in the activities.
- Helping to set up equipment and tidy away at the end of the session.
- Helping to maintain a safe and welcoming environment.
What do I need?
- A lively and friendly personality, being approachable and friendly
- Whilst it is not essential, a skill or interest in something creative would be great – for example dance, drama, music, arts and crafts, keep fit etc.
- Good communication skills
- Accepting of others who might be different to you
- The ability to work as part of a diverse team
- A willingness to learn and work within guidelines set out by Midland Mencap
- Honesty, integrity and trustworthy
- Good time management skills, reliability, independence

What would I be doing?
- Helping people to take part in various arts and crafts activities such as card making, model making, painting, and other creative activities.

Art Club is an art class where attendees learn new techniques and get experience of fine art mediums and materials in an inclusive format.
Gardening & Upcycling involves supporting attendees to engage with growing projects in our small garden, and giving life to old objects in a creative way!
Crafty Afternoons is a relaxed craft group where attendees have fun with materials to produce mini projects and one-off items to take home.

Our weekly social night gives our citizens the chance to meet their friends and enjoy a range of games and music, or pop into town for something to eat or a game of bowling.
Our monthly disco is filled with music, laughs and good times. Whether you want to dance along or you are just happy to chat, you can help someone to have a fun night.
- Supporting people to take part in various activities, including arts and crafts, music, quizzes, gentle sports, trips and community outings.

Creative Arts Sessions Volunteer

Volunteering with Midland Mencap is your opportunity to do something really positive, to have a great time, and help us achieve our vision.
Purpose of the role?
People with a physical or learning disability are often excluded from mainstream social groups and activities and may find it difficult to access fun things to do. Midland Mencap provides accessible and affordable activities in safe environments for adults with learning disabilities, their families and carers.
We need volunteers to assist our team in delivering workshops based around music and the arts to enrich citizens’ lives and help encouraging creativity and an engagement with the arts across the region. This is a very “hands-on” role, and you will enjoy lots of interaction with our citizens and staff.
What would I be doing?
A Journey Through Music
• Help support our Creative Lead with encouraging participants in their reading and comprehension of a wide and eclectic range of song lyrics, while helping to encourage their participation in fun discussions about what they like and think about the music they journey through. Volunteers will help encourage the participants in their own lyrical & musical journey, fully supported by our Creative Lead.
• It would be great if you were able to join in with singing too, but this is not essential, but a love of music and performance would be helpful.
• Other tasks will be required, like helping set up and close the sessions e.g., setting up tables and chairs, moving and handling session resources and supporting the group with local community trips to cultural arts venues, or recording studios.
Creative Minds:
• Help support our Creative Lead in engaging our participants to explore their own creative minds. We do this through the exploration of creative arts, from poetry to classic and contemporary art, to different genres of music, like rap!
• We are looking for volunteers who also have creative minds, who would enjoy helping support our participants to explore the world of art, which leads to the creation and exhibition of their own art, from poetry to arts-and-crafts and drama, or a combination of it all!
• Other tasks will be required to support the session, with 1:1, or small group breakout group tasks, helping to capture people’s ideas through scribing and helping set up and close the sessions as well as supporting the group with local community trips to cultural arts venues.
What do I need?
To be a volunteer you need to be

• Experience in creative arts and music would be nice but not essential!

Parkride Cycling – Volunteer Role

Purpose of the role?
Many people with a learning or physical disability struggle to enjoy cycling, and families often find the cost of adapted bikes mean that they cannot share fun times together.
Parkride is a fun and flexible inclusive cycling project using a range of adapted and standard bikes that provides anyone, regardless of age, ability or need, with the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors through cycling.
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers who enjoy being active, to support at our inclusive cycling sessions for people across the West Midlands!
What would I be doing?
• Supporting children and adults with learning disabilities and their families/carers to take part in regular community bike rides
• Leading on small cycling trips in suitable areas such as parks.
• Helping to set up before each session and tidying away afterwards
• Assisting Midland Mencap staff to deliver fun and engaging parkride sessions
• Helping to maintain a fleet of bikes to ensure as many people as possible can take part in cycling sessions
• Helping parkride participants to learn the basics of bicycle maintenance
What do I need?
• Knowledge and experience of cycling
• An interest in cycle maintenance would be amazing, although this isn’t essential
• Being approachable and friendly with good communication skills
• Accepting of others who might be different to you and the ability to work as part of a diverse team
• A willingness to learn and work within guidelines set out by Midland Mencap
• Honesty, integrity and trustworthy
• Good time management skills, reliability
An enhanced DBS check will be required by all successful applicants.
When and where do you need me?
We have several parkride sessions running throughout the week including evenings and weekends. Sessions vary from 2-4 hours.
We run sessions throughout the Midlands, including Birmingham (all areas), Walsall, Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell, Coventry, Solihull, and Worcestershire. You can attend sessions in your local area.
All sessions are weather dependent; however, we only cancel sessions in extreme weather. We would advise having a warm waterproof coat and suitable shoes.

Front of House Volunteer Role (Weoley Castle Community Centre)

Purpose of the role?
Our Weoley Castle Community Centre is a thriving and busy hub where adults with learning disabilities, carers, professionals and the local community access a variety of services.
We are looking for volunteers who would like to help us maintain a safe and welcoming environment for visitors at the community centre!
What would I be doing?
- Occupying the reception area to welcome visitors to the centre – including managing the front door
- Greeting visitors in a friendly manner and ensuring they sign in
- Receiving any deliveries safely and notifying the correct person
- Answering the telephone during busy periods and taking messages
- Maintaining an attractive, welcoming and tidy reception area
- Assisting people with disabilities to access information about upcoming events
- During quiet periods, helping with general building tidying tasks
What do I need?
To be a volunteer you need to have
- Ability to volunteer independently whilst staff members may be busy
- Confidence to answer the door and permit visitors in a vigilant manner
- Being approachable and friendly, building a rapport with visitors

Van Driver Volunteer Role

Purpose of the role?
Many people struggle to enjoy cycling, and some families often find the cost of adapted bikes mean that they cannot share fun times together.
Parkride is a fun and flexible inclusive cycling project using a range of adapted and standard bikes that provides anyone, regardless of age, ability or need, with the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors through cycling.
We require a volunteer van driver to help us deliver our custom-made bikes and trikes to locations such as parks and community centres around the West Midlands.
We’ve got the van; we just need you!
What would I be doing?
• You will be a vital link between us and the families we support, helping us to get the team and bikes to where they’re needed for arranged sessions.
• You’ll be the friendly face of Parkride, interacting with the families and ensuring the bikes are kept safe and secure whilst the team are out riding.
• Working with staff to load/unload the van before and after sessions.
What do I need?
• Minimum age 25
• Experience of driving a large van with a suitable driving licence
• A full and clean driving licence (held for a minimum of 5 years)
• Some lifting will be required and so a basic level of fitness is needed.
• Being approachable and friendly with good communication skills
• Accepting of others who might be different to you and the ability to work as part of a diverse team
• A willingness to learn and work within guidelines set out by Midland Mencap

What does a ‘Parent-Carers Project Worker’ do?
As a key team member of the Midland Mencap/Sandwell Carers team, you’ll play a central role in identifying and supporting unpaid Parent-Carers— who provide care to their Children with SEND, other disabilities or long-term conditions.
You’ll build strong, trusting relationships with individuals, families, volunteers, and partner organisations, working in a way that is co-produced and rooted in mutual respect.
You will help carers identify and build on their many strengths, through the delivery of a range of workshops, support groups and information and advice sessions both in-person in community settings across Sandwell and online. Themes include areas of topic like Understanding Education Health & Care Plan’s, Carers Rights, Sensory Play, Communication and more – don’t be put off if these subjects are new to you – training will be provided.
Your day-to-day duties will include:
Direct Support: Offering information and advice, through the facilitation and delivery of workshops/support groups and other similar activities and events.
Collaborative Planning: Working together with colleagues, carers, and volunteers to design and deliver a wide range of meaningful, inclusive activities that reflect the strengths, interests and goals of those we support.
Asset-Based Approaches: Identifying and celebrating the strengths of individuals and communities, from across Sandwell’s rich cultural diversity.
Information & Guidance: Providing clear, relevant advice and signposting to help Parent-Carers navigate services, understand their rights, and access support.
Promotion & Outreach: Helping to raise awareness of Sandwell Carers within local communities and through professional networks, including statutory and voluntary agencies.

What does an Assessment & Reviewing Officer do?
In this vital role, you will be responsible for identifying and supporting families and individuals who provide unpaid care to people with disabilities and illnesses. You will work closely with a diverse range of internal and external partners and stakeholders to carry out Statutory Carers Assessments and Wellbeing Assessments (Plus Assessment Reviews), ensuring that carers receive high-quality information, advice, and guidance. These services aim to deliver engaging, meaningful outcomes that enhance carers’ overall wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct Statutory Carers AssessmentsandWellbeing Assessments, using a strengths-based, person-centred approach.
