JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Head of French Department: French Hours of Work: Approximately 0.65 FTE Responsible To: Assistant Head Responsible For: French Department Summary of Role: We are seeking a well-qualified, experienced and dynamic Head of French to lead and develop the teaching of this popular and important subject. We pride ourselves on ensuring that the students in our care receive the very best teaching, as well as opportunities to participate in trips, visits, competitions and cultural events. The Head of French works closely with the Heads of Spanish and German to ensure consistency between languages, the sharing of best practice, and to promote the learning of Languages at Woldingham. French is a popular and successful subject at Woldingham. In Year 7 students take either French or Spanish as their first MFL and follow a course that includes metacognitive sessions aimed at helping them strengthen their generic language-learning skills. In Year 8 they may take up a second MFL in addition or opt to continue with a greater number of lessons in MFL1. At KS4 and at A Level we follow the AQA specification, and students achieve impressive results, with some of the highest value-added scores in the school. In the 6th form, students may opt for the full A Level, or take AS after one year of study. We have a number of bilingual students, and their needs are catered for on a case-by-case basis. The French department offers a variety of trips and visits. These include a weekend stay at Château du Broutel for our year 7 and 8 students, a week-long exchange to a school in Annecy for year 9 students, and GCSE and A Level daytrip to London for conferences. The French classrooms are situated together in Marden House, next to the French office. The department is well- staffed with 5 French teachers and a French assistant. All classrooms have interactive whiteboard displays and sound systems, as well as more traditional whiteboards. The languages departments are well-resourced and prominent within the school and remain an important priority for both students and parents. JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Housemistress (Scott) Department: Residential Responsible To: Director of Boarding Responsible For: Assistant Housemistress Graduate Assistant Summary of Role The role represents a fantastic opportunity to lead a team of dedicated professionals in nurturing our Year 10 and 11 Flexi and Weekly Boarders, delivering outstanding pastoral care, and ensuring a first-class boarding experience for our students. Following a re-structure for our Yr 10 and 11 Boarders this is a unique opportunity to create a vibrant and happy house dedicated to our boarders who stay with us during the week. In the adjacent house (Triffitt) our Yr 10 and 11 full boarders live under the care of their own boarding team. Whilst each team is responsible for their own house, the two houses work hand in hand during the week, often sharing staff, activities and registrations between them in order to create the best experience for the girls. The Housemistress leads in providing for the safety, progress and happiness of the students in her care, supported by an Assistant Housemistress who reports directly to her. The house is also assisted by a Graduate Assistant 3 evenings a week. This role is suited to a member of teaching or non-teaching staff (on reduced teaching hours). Non-teaching staff will be allocated additional duties during the day in line with experience, knowledge and the wider needs of the school and boarding community. Whilst Scott House itself is shut Friday evening to Sunday evening the Housemistress will still work weekends in line with all other houses. Their weekend duties will fall mainly within Triffitt House supporting their weekend programme of activities and study for the girls but will also likely include some time in other houses at various points as well. Scott House welcomes back a small number of weekly boarders on a Sunday night ready for the week ahead. Development of house Under the supervision of the Director of Boarding the Housemistress is responsible for the management of the boarding house and is an important part of the overall ethos and community. To this end, responsibilities include: • To be concerned for each girl’s development – academic, social, spiritual and personal welfare and take responsibility for the happiness, well‐being, health, safety and pastoral care of the girls. • To create an orderly house, by ensuring behaviour matches expectations and when it does not, implementing fair consequences. • To create a ‘home from home’ environment in the boarding house with an atmosphere that fosters kindness, inclusion, enthusiasm for learning and participation in school life • To build and maintain positive and respective relationships with pupils, in order to provide them with the best possible care and support. • To build and maintain strong relationships with parents and guardians. • To be the public ‘face’ of the boarding experience; working closely with External Relations team to promote the school to prospective families including undertaking tours, managing sleepover events, and attending school fairs. • To lead with the preparation of the House before the start of term and to assist with the clear‐up at the end of term. Day-to-day responsibilities include: • To be on wake-up and breakfast duty on a weekday rota within the boarding team. • To support registration in the morning and afternoon. • Liaising with the Health Centre regarding any girls requiring treatment, including escorting students to medical/dental appointments as needed. • Administering medication as required and recording details in the medication log. • To be an active presence in the House before and after school, and at weekends. • Liaising with Domestic Services, Maintenance, Catering and Transport departments regarding requirements for the House and its students. • To support the External Relations team in selecting student tour guides for recruitment events. • Ordering the weekly grocery shopping • Ensuring good order, tidiness and maintenance of service rooms, bedroom/common room areas. • Ensuring effective and timely communication with Parents and Guardians via email/telephone. • To supervise students during the day and evening, including during silent study on weekday evenings. • Ensuring that lost property around the House is dealt with in an efficient manner. • Ensuring security of the year area including nightly ‘lock-up’. • To ensure the safety of girls and staff by maintaining accurate records, dealing appropriately with risks, and reporting any problems. • Maintaining individual student files including, as appropriate, individual care plans. • To monitor rewards and sanctions data and to intervene in line with policy • Ensuring exeat information is completed and authorised each week, that safe travel arrangements are in place, and taking follow-up action as appropriate. • Ensuring that the ‘handover’ logbook, discipline, medication, sanctions and other centralised records are kept up to date. • Maintaining records of all communications/contacts with parents and guardians. • Carrying out other reasonable requests, in line with the broad responsibilities of the role, for both boarding and the wider school. Residential Team Management • Fostering, by example and encouragement, religious observances including Mass and ‘Night Prayers’. • Supervising meals and undertaking other weekend /evening duties as organised by the Director of Boarding. • Organising Socials with other schools • To ensure your house is compliant with the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools, School policies and procedures, House aims and objectives and reporting any issues as they arise in a timely manner. • To undertake ongoing professional development by attending INSET sessions in or out of School. • To keep abreast of developments in boarding and to liaise with the Head of Boarding to advise on any strategic opportunities for improvement to the boarding experience. The Housemistress will also attend fortnightly meetings with the Director of Boarding as well as a weekly Residential Team meeting. The Housemistress will also be expected to attend half-termly whole school Staff Meetings and Staff Conferences at the beginning of each term. On Duty Hours • The full time on-duty hours for the Housemistress typically includes 3 nights on duty as well as the usual wake up rotations, agreed on a rota by the Director of Boarding. • Every other weekend as agreed with the Director of Boarding Off Duty Hours • The off-duty hours for the Housemistress typically includes at least one 24-hour period each week, agreed on a rota by the Director of Boarding. • One additional evening a week as agreed with the Director of Boarding • Every other weekend as agreed with the Director of Boarding Residential Requirements This is a residential post. Private accommodation attached to the boarding house, is provided. Accommodation is free although a small tax liability may be incurred. All meals can be taken in the school dining room during term time. Please note that the accommodation provided is within a non-smoking area of the school. Pets may be accommodated in the property in discussion with the Director of Finance and Operations. During term time, house staff are expected to reside on site when on duty and will be required to do overnight call; you should be available to the girls for unexpected illness or other such situations which may arise. You will be on a rota for fire officer duty in case evacuation of the building is required due to the fire alarm sounding. All House Staff are expected to be in residence before the start of term to attend staff meetings and to prepare Year areas before return of Boarders. JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Premises and Caretaking Operative Department: Operations Hours of Work: 40 hours per week as per the Site Services rota system. Responsible To: Senior Caretaker Responsible For: N/A Summary of Role: To provide a professional caretaking service to both the school and commercial functions of the organisation. Carry out general works around the school to include initial first line response to minor day to day maintenance requirements. To carry out general porterage and deliveries arounds the school To provide premises and caretaker duties in conjunction with three other team members, including general site security, to ensure the smooth running of the school equipment and fittings providing heating and fire safety. To ensure all tasks required for a particular shift have been undertaken, including jobs that are submitted via the service desk which should be prioritised and completed in a timely fashion in line with School polices and procedures. To provide site services around the year on a shift basis, with the requirement to be able to work flexibly within that to cover annual leave and sickness absence. Specific Responsibilities: General Delivery of security services that meet prescribed standards for all school buildings as directed by the Site Services Manager, Director of Estates or the Director of Finance and Operations. Report and where possible repair all identified H&S or maintenance defects involving furniture, furnishings, fittings and buildings fabric according to established procedures. Other such general duties as may be reasonably requested from time to time by the Lead Caretaker, Director of Estates or Director of Finance and Operations. Carry out water quality checks and chemical dosing at the swimming pool as required and following pool plant operator training guidelines. General works to include tightening screws, changing bulbs, painting and decorating. If unable to carry out a repair, escalate to the Maintenance department as required. Fire safety Provide oversight of fire safety matters when on duty, including operation of the fire alarm system, checking that all firefighting devices, extinguishers and fire signs are in place. Function check of fire alarm system and liaison with relevant contractors. Ensure main thoroughfares of the School comply with fire safety requirements and remain safe at all times. Respond to fire alarms in accordance with written Fire Alarm Procedure. Assist in the maintenance of a fire door check register and carry out fire door inspections as required. Record of fire alarm evacuations and tests. Security Respond to all emergency situations when on duty. Unlock the School and ensure principal road barrier is raised at the designated time each morning and lock again at designated time each evening. Follow School lock-up routine each evening ensuring all unnecessary light and heating is off as required. Oversee the out of hours control of all persons entering and exiting the school campus, including contractors and couriers to ensure full implementation of site security procedures. Conduct routine security checks and control the opening of the doors for contractors. Monitor access and egress CCTV cameras as directed by the Lead Caretaker or Director of Estates. Carry out CCTV investigations as authorised and directed by the appropriate senior leader, and in line with Woldingham Schools’ CCTV Policy and associated procedures. Provide effective operation of all School intruder alarms ensuring codes are supplied only to authorised people. Provide, control and issue of all School key and door entry fobs as instructed by the Lead Caretaker or Director of Estates. All keys and fobs issued to students and staff within the school site are to be signed for in the Key Register ensuring a full record of all key issues is maintained. Operation and maintenance of all School locks. Undertake relevant security training as required. Carry out regular Health and Safety inspections of slips and trips around the school specifically looking for slips and trips in accordance with the health and safety policy. Follow health and safety risk assessments and policy as directed by the Lead Caretaker or Director of Estates. Operations Carry the duty mobile phone. When leaving site when on duty, the Caretaker responsibilities are to be handed over to an authorised relief. Undertake pro-active, immediate action to prevent or minimise the effect of any incident or emergency within the School that threatens the safety of the School or the wellbeing of staff, students, or visitors to the School. Attend in the event of any accident, incident or fire and will initiate action to deal with fire, floods, or spills. Action taken is to be reported to the duty senior member of staff as soon as possible after the event. Report any immediate maintenance to School fittings and fixtures to avoid breaching H&S requirements and/or prevent accidents from occurring. The School Maintenance Department should be tasked via the SD system. Undertake the replacement of easy access lighting electric lamps and fluorescent tubes having regard to working at H&S regulations. Appropriate stocks of required lamps/bulbs/tubes are to be maintained. Responsible for ensuring all School clocks are accounted for and are functioning correctly and are showing the correct time. Manage any requests for portable heaters and cooling fans. Ensure all security and site tasks continue to be effectively performed to the required standards, during weekends and out of School hours and period. In particular, tasks that may require to be undertaken at weekends include unlocking areas of the School as required by teachers and students, transport of pupils between the School and the station. Assist with driving duties and provide ad hoc shuttle services to the station. Work together with the School Maintenance and Grounds staff in the provision of manpower to help service school requirements for School or letting events. Take delivery of parcels and packages either in person or collect from the designated delivery point and deliver to main house. Car Parking Provide overall supervision of car parking and signage for School or external functions held across the School site, liaising as required with Head Gardener for additional manpower when necessary. Assist staff, students and visitors in complying with School car parking regulations and enforcing such. Ensure that appropriate signage is put in place for events and that car parks are marshalled during busy periods. Sustainability Manage recycling in line with the agreed procedures. Dispose of all hazardous electrical waste in the designated waste containers in accordance with H&S legislation. Energy Provide a weekly check of the level of fuel supplies required by the School. Ordering of all fuel supplies for the school through a range of local suppliers to sustain required levels. In this respect, a requirement to anticipate any unusual market or other circumstances do not denude the School of adequate stock. Ensure all energy supplies are invoiced to the School. During fuel deliveries, accompany the fuel delivery operator and ensure accurate records are made at delivery points in accordance with the Procedures. Undertake routine inspections on plantrooms and reporting any heating, cooling or ventilation issues to the Maintenance department during core hours or placing a call for an emergency response outside of core hours PAT Testing Assist with the periodic PAT testing of boarding students’ portable electrical appliances and respond to requests for PAT testing of individual items belonging to the girls.
