Position
The JCIE Administrator supports the work of the Joint Committee on Intercollegiate Examinations (JCIE) and the Joint Surgical Colleges Fellowship Examinations (JSCFE), which manage the Specialty Fellowship Examinations for UK and international surgeons. These examinations, taken in two parts (written and clinical), allow successful candidates to apply for Fellowship with one of the four Royal Surgical Colleges.
Working within the Examinations, Education and Faculties Directorate as part of the JCIE/JSCFE Team, the JCIE Administrator plays a key role in delivering a large and complex examinations programme. The post involves close liaison with Board Chairs, Examiners, and Candidates, ensuring a professional, efficient, and friendly service.
Key responsibilities include preparing and managing documentation and reports, maintaining databases and spreadsheets, analysing data, coordinating meetings, and supporting decision-making processes. The role also requires effective internal and external communication, adherence to organisational policies, and flexibility to take on additional duties as required.
The JCIE Administrator will be required to travel and work away from Edinburgh for examinations; this will require overnight stays away from the normal place of residence. These commitments are an integral part of the job activities.
Requirements
This is a superb opportunity for an individual who is confident, methodical, organised and conscientious.
Educated to a minimum level of Standard Grade Credit Level (SCQF Level 5) or equivalent, or, you will have proven administrative, secretarial and database experience.
You will have excellent communication and team working skills. You will be a proficient user of the MS Office suite and have the ability to prioritise your workload with minimum supervision. A high level of professionalism and diplomacy is required for the role as is a willingness to take on new challenges and be receptive to change.

About Trustee Board Committees
The College’s governing board is made up of 12 trustees: the President, five Vice-Presidents, and two Member Trustees – all of whom are clinicians – and four ‘appointed’ lay trustees. You can find out more about the trustees here.
The Board has established a number of committees to assist in fulfilling its oversight and governance responsibilities. These committees have each decided to appoint a lay member with specific expertise relevant to their terms of reference, as follows:
- Remuneration, People and Workplace Culture Committee. Advises the Trustee Board on a wide range of staffing, remuneration, pensions and workplace culture activities. It is seeking a lay member with expertise and senior experience in relation to HR/people management, ideally in an organisation of similar size and complexity to the College.
- Strategy, Estates and Finance Committee.Advises the Trustee Board on financial matters, property and digital strategy. The College has a complex and varied property estate in Edinburgh. The Committee is seeking a lay member with expertise and senior experience in relation to estates management in an organisation with a mixed-use estate including listed buildings.
- Nominations and Appointments Committee. Makes recommendations to the Trustee Board on certain senior non-executive appointments within the College and oversees recruitment processes for non-executive appointments more generally. It is seeking a lay member with expertise and senior experience in achieving diversity in non-executive appointments.
- Audit and Risk Committee. Makes recommendations to the Trustee Board in relation to the annual report and accounts and the College’s approach to risk management. It is seeking a lay member with expertise and senior experience in developing and implementing risk management systems in similar contexts to the College’s.
Work of lay members
Trustee Board committees usually meet four times a year, during working hours. Meetings are usually hybrid, with some members attending in person in the College and some attending online. Some business is transacted by email.

- Offer a professional opinion and adopt a short, medium and long-term perspective to ensure ongoing growth and long-term sustainability as well as helping resolve immediate problems

- Exercise sound judgement and provide reasons to support it
- Show a willingness to participate actively in discussion with highly developed interpersonal and communication skills

Length of Term
Appointments are for 3 years. Further re-appointment for a 1-year term may be possible, following re-application, in line with the terms of the committee’s remit.

Position
We are seeking an experienced, proactive Digital Project Manager to coordinate the implementation of risr/apply and risr/assess, which are critical systems supporting the College’s examinations function and wider digital transformation agenda.
Reporting to the Strategic Change Lead and embedded within the Exams Project Team, you will lead end-to-end delivery to ensure these systems are implemented to a high standard, are staff-centred and operationally fit for purpose, and align with related initiatives including legacy system migration and Dynamics 365 integration.
You will manage delivery in an Agile environment, coordinate multiple workstreams (including forward planning for risr/apply), and manage dependencies, risks and issues across the programme. You will act as the primary liaison between College stakeholders and the risr delivery teams. The role also includes significant engagement and communication activity, both internally and externally (including intercollegiate coordination), to maintain alignment, momentum and successful adoption.
You will play a central part in improving exam processes, strengthening data quality and flow, and enabling cross-College ways of working. This is a dynamic role requiring strong project leadership, change delivery capability and excellent stakeholder management, with the confidence to influence diplomatically, work independently and deliver under pressure.
There may be a requirement for occasional out-of-hours work and UK travel.
Requirements
Essential experience and skills
You will have experience of:
- Leading digital or system implementation projects in Agile environments
- Coordinating change across multiple departments and stakeholder groups
- Managing third-party suppliers and technical delivery cycles
- Developing and delivering structured change, training and communications plans
- Coordinating testing activity (including UAT) and supporting go-live readiness
- Working with cloud-based platforms such as Dynamics 365, Microsoft 365 and Power BI
Desirable
- Experience of education and/or exam platforms
- Understanding of membership organisations and/or regulatory environments
- Familiarity with common project and collaboration tools (e.g. Jira, Monday.com, SharePoint)
