Field Days, our Horticultural project at Five Mile Lane, Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, is looking to fill a vacancy for the post of Horticultural Assistant to the Coordinator of the project.
The Project supports people with Learning Disabilities to engage in growing and cultivating vegetables and plants for sale to the public who visit the Amelia Trust Farm in Barry, where the project is based.
The post holder will need to have horticultural experience, ideally having a Horticulture qualification or be used to working in an allotment environment.
They would need to be a driver with their own transport or have other means of getting onsite in the morning and home after work and especially also a minibus driver, as they would have to be either picking people up in the minibus or preparing work before participants arrive.
The post holder will need to supervise and demonstrate how to sow seeds, pot up, plant, weed, dig, cut back, mow, pick/harvest, turn compost, move crates of plants/veg, move full wheelbarrows and other associated tasks.
They will also have one to one support experience in order to understand and work with people with learning disabilities and be physically able to perform the above tasks.

Provide physical support with: domestic tasks, shopping, diet / food preparation,
personal appearance / hygiene, behaviour management and being a positive role
model.
Provide practical support to: participate in tasks / activities within their home and
community, and to attend online activities using various digital platforms.
Provide emotional support by: empathising and actively listening, accessing
appropriate additional support where necessary. To support individuals with their
sensory needs and promote a positive environment to support this.
Provide support with health needs by: supporting people to access appropriate
health care and enabling them to make informed choices regarding prescribed
treatment, seeking advice where they are unable to advocate for themselves. To
work alongside other professionals e.g. psychologists, care managers and
Community Nurses to deliver high quality support.
