The successful candidate will play a key role in the charity’s growing communications team working closely with colleagues at the charity, and other stakeholders from the wider Moorfields family, including Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, Friends of Moorfields and Moorfields Private. The PR manager will be responsible for the implementation and delivery of the charity’s public relations plan, supporting all aspects of the charity’s media relations, publicity and engagement with high-profile ambassadors. The postholder will implement the PR plan for the charity’s new grants and research strategy, to be launched in 2026, raising awareness of the charity’s grant-making programmes and growing the number of high quality applications from potential grant applicants at Moorfields Eye Hospital, the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, and other national research institutions. The postholder will also be responsible for disseminating and distributing impact stories from the charity’s funding programmes, demonstrating the important role of eye health research and innovation in the UK. The PR manager will lead the delivery of the public relations plan for the charity’s new fundraising and communications campaign, The Future in Sight, ensuring that the charity meets its ambitious targets to grow its supporter base and amplify public awareness for its work. The 18-month campaign, launching in early 2026, will be raising funds to power the research and innovation that will take place in the new Moorfields and UCL Centre for Eye Health, due to open its doors in 2027. Working in collaboration with communications colleagues from the wider Moorfields family, the post holder will deliver a PR plan that raises awareness of the fundraising and communications campaign, boosts the fundraising efforts, and engages the public with the work of the charity. £ £22.5 million income raised 1,052 Eye to Eye participants £58.9 million committed in awards Role description Programme management › Work with the head of communications to develop and deliver the charity’s press and PR plan across all corporate and programmatic communications. › Manage a programme of profile-raising PR and media relations for the charity and its spokespeople. › Contribute to the development of PR plans for the charity and its programmes. › Write and distribute press materials regarding the charity and its programmes, including drafting quotes on behalf of charity spokespeople. › Track and monitor media coverage about the charity and its programmes. › Monitor progress against key performance indicators for the charity’s PR programme and other areas of work, effectively using and analysing data where necessary. › Work collaboratively with the communications and media relations teams at Moorfields Eye Hospital, UCL, and other key partners, to amplify the charity’s voice in partner communications. › Organise and coordinate media training for the charity’s senior staff and spokespeople, as relevant. › Draft and coordinate briefings for spokespeople, as required. › Ensure brand guidelines and house style are understood and adhered to by the wider charity team, partners and suppliers. › Provide communications expertise to charity staff. › Contribute to the reputation of the charity by promoting communications best practice at all times by all members of staff and challenging bad practice should it occur. › Work collaboratively with the head of communications, and senior staff, to manage our crisis communications activity, when necessary. Grants and research › Lead the delivery of a national PR plan for the charity’s grants strategy and programmes, promoting opportunities for researchers, academics and healthcare professionals to apply for funding from the charity. › Develop excellent relationships with the health and science media, growing awareness of the work the charity funds through its grant programmes. › Work collaboratively with the charity’s grants and research team to raise the profile of our charity’s funded work. › Work collaboratively with the grants communications officer to develop and share impact stories with the press and media. Fundraising communications › Oversee and deliver the national and regional PR plan for the charity’s fundraising and communications campaign, The Future in Sight. › Commission, brief and oversee the relevant communications and PR agencies working on The Future in Sight campaign, in collaboration with the head of communications and head of fundraising and engagement. › Work closely with the communications and the fundraising and engagement teams to amplify the campaign’s narrative and messaging, to boost awareness of the campaign and maximise fundraising efforts. › Create several key PR moments for the campaign, in collaboration with the relevant agencies, to generate significant regional and national media coverage. Celebrity and ambassador engagement › Deliver our celebrity engagement plan, working in collaboration with colleagues in our fundraising teams, and at Moorfields Eye Hospital. › Enhance the charity’s PR opportunities through engaging celebrities and other high-profile individuals, sharing content with the media and through other channels. Finance › Monitor financial expenditure on grants against awarded budgets including working with the grant holders and charity and host institution finance teams. › Ensure timely and accurate allocation of restricted donations to grants. › Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and processing of invoices. › Support the funding manager and director of grants and research in financial reconciliation and reporting. Communications › Be a point of contact for the development of content for multimedia channels including liaising with grant holders, their teams and other stakeholders. › Provide ideas and draft content from the grant portfolio for publications such as our annual impact report. › Support the fundraising team’s supporter stewardship by providing content for communications to donors on eye health, education, research, patient care, innovation and related areas of interest. › Contribute to and support the update of grants and research related sections of the charity’s website. Grant monitoring and impact › Support the post-award monitoring of grants awarded by the charity. This includes monitoring own portfolio of grants, raising and resolving concerns, ensuring compliance with funding conditions and supporting the evaluation of grants. › Develop and produce reports, undertake analysis of outcomes and outputs arising from charity funded projects. › Request and process interim, end of grant reports and programmatic reports. › Support the implementation of the charity’s impact framework.
