Director of Finance and Operations
I joined BRAC UK in January 2023 as Finance Director, with responsibility for managing BRAC UK’s finances and its financial relationships with the wider BRAC. I began my career at PwC and then spent 12 years in a range of different financial roles at the BBC including at the World Service, Sport department, and the Corporate centre. After a year volunteering overseas I moved across to the NGO sector, initially at the British Red Cross and then to Farm Africa, including in the Kenya country office and latterly as Finance Director. After five years at Farm Africa I moved to the Motivation Charitable Trust, a disability inclusion INGO and social enterprise, as Finance Director, and from there to BRAC. My professional experience includes strategic financial planning, regulatory compliance, business process improvement, and financial capacity building. I am a chartered accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, and hold a degree in politics and history from Durham University. I am also a trustee of the Exodus Travels Foundation, a charitable foundation with the mission to improve life through travel in hard-to-reach places.

My role at BRAC UK includes financial oversight of our overseas programmes and day to day management of BRAC UK’s own finances. I work with finance staff in our overseas partner organisations and with the UK Partnerships team to fulfil our donor reporting and compliance obligations as well as to develop new programmes and proposals. I have over 15 years’ experience working in finance-related roles in the charity and non-profit sector and over 5 years working for international NGOs, previously working for Health Poverty Action before joining BRAC in March 2021. I am passionate about social justice and motivated by BRAC’s ‘bottom up’ approach to development and position as the leading Global South NGO. In my time at BRAC UK, I have worked with project teams bringing hope to the poorest communities in Tanzania, Uganda, Sierra Leone and Bangladesh and was privileged to visit two of those projects in Uganda earlier in 2022. In my spare time, I am usually to be found closer to home, walking, cycling or climbing mountains!

I have been with BRAC UK since summer 2021. Within the Partnerships team, my role is to support new business development through prospect research, donor qualification and engagement. I have also recently begun developing our legacy giving programme as part of my work supporting BRAC UK to diversify its income. With a background in Environmental Science, I went on to complete a Masters in Environment & Development to better understand the complex interactions between global inequality, environmental degradation and climate change. I am particularly interested in Southern-led development and climate adaptive & resilient livelihoods, which is what drew me to BRAC. I have over 3 years of experience in the charity sector, where I have specialised in donor stewardship, fundraising and campaigns. Before joining BRAC, I worked for Kew Foundation at RBG, Kew where I supported fundraisers to deliver quality, bespoke stewardship to individual donors. I am proud to be part of the BRAC family and to be supporting the organisation’s incredible work to build a world free from discrimination and exploitation.

Stephanie Hughes
Partnerships Officer
Currently I work at BRAC Europe as Partnerships Officer, supporting the organisation’s engagements with trusts, foundations and institutional partners. In my role, I have helped to design and implement fundraising strategies that advance BRAC’s mission to empower people and communities living in poverty, with a particular focus on our initiatives in Africa supporting climate resilience.
Before taking on this position, I started my journey at BRAC Europe in 2022 working as Executive and HR Assistant to the senior management team, where I coordinated high-level governance, strategic events, and donor engagement initiatives. Prior to joining BRAC, I gained experience in the health sector, developing strong skills in project management, coordination, and stakeholder relations.
I hold an MSc in Climate Change, Development and Policy from the Institute of Development Studies, where my research focused on climate injustice and small-scale farmers in Kenya. Passionate about gender equality, climate adaptation, and inclusive development, I am deeply committed to supporting BRAC’s efforts to deliver scalable and sustainable solutions that improve lives and promote resilience in the face of global injustice.
