British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF) is a national charity that supports people with sight loss. We're undergoing an exciting transformation from a charity which provides audio devices into the UK's leading technology empowerment service for people with sight loss.
Alongside this service transformation, we're undergoing a strategic rebrand. This provides the perfect platform to launch ourselves as a charity that empowers our community, through tech support and services.

The role
This is a rare opportunity to build something genuinely transformative from the ground up. As Project Manager, you'll lead BWBF's evolution into a comprehensive technology empowerment service, developing and delivering a nationwide support programme that addresses the biggest unmet need in the visual impairment sector.
You'll design delivery mechanisms, establish partnerships, build a volunteer network, and create the frameworks that will enable people with sight loss to access technology independently.
Key Responsibilities
Service Development & Delivery
- Lead design and launch of technology empowerment service
- Develop triage systems, referral pathways, support protocols, and technology scope framework
- Create accessible training manuals, guides, and online resources for service users
- Establish and maintain service quality standards across all delivery channels
Volunteer Management & Recruitment
- Line manage Volunteer Coordinator and support volunteer recruitment strategy
- Commission and coordinate specialist VI trainers to deliver volunteer training programmes
- Build volunteer support structures, mentoring pathways, recognition programmes, and safeguarding protocols
- Monitor volunteer capacity, workload distribution, retention, and ensure consistent quality across the network
Partnership Development
- Establish partnerships with libraries and community centres for hub locations
- Build relationships with local and national blind societies
- Develop technology company partnerships and manage referral pathways with sector organisations
Monitoring & Evaluation
- Design evaluation framework, impact metrics, and feedback systems
- Track service utilisation, outcomes data, and prepare regular reports for CEO and Board
- Build evidence base through case studies and document best practices
Strategic Planning & Operations
- Identify service innovation opportunities and stay informed of technological developments and sector trends
- Manage project budget, coordinate with Communications & Marketing, and maintain operational records
Person Specification
Essential
- Proven track record designing and implementing new services or programmes from concept to delivery, ideally at scale
- Strong project management skills with ability to coordinate multiple work streams and deliver to deadlines
- Experience working with volunteers, including recruitment, training, support, and retention
- Ability to design systems, processes, and quality frameworks
- Strong monitoring and evaluation skills with ability to design metrics and assess impact
- Exceptional communication skills and highly organised with strong attention to detail
- Confident working independently in remote environment while collaborating with distributed teams
- Willingness to travel anywhere in the UK (with sufficient notice and accessible support for any identified needs)
- Knowledge of assistive technology and accessibility features
Highly Desirable
- Experience in visual impairment or disability sector
- Lived experience of sight loss
- Experience managing service delivery at scale and line management experience
- Understanding of safeguarding requirements and experience designing triage or referral systems
- A recognised project management qualification (e.g. PRINCE2 Practitioner Level)

The Role
This is an exciting opportunity to build and nurture a nationwide volunteer network that will transform how people with sight loss access technology support. As Volunteer Coordinator, you'll be the heartbeat of our volunteer programme, recruiting, supporting, and championing volunteers who deliver life-changing technology support across the UK.
You'll ensure volunteers feel valued, supported, and equipped to deliver excellent support while managing capacity, retention, and community building.
Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Recruitment & Onboarding
- Design and deliver recruitment campaigns
- Manage application process, conduct interviews, and strategically recruit for geographic coverage
- Coordinate onboarding including DBS checks,
- Work with Project Manager and VI trainers to support delivery of training programmes
- Create and maintain volunteer handbooks and reference materials
Support & Supervision
- Provide day-to-day support as primary point of contact, holding regular check-ins on wellbeing, workload, and satisfaction
- Coordinate peer support networks and mentoring relationships
- Manage volunteer capacity and workload distribution to prevent burnout
Scheduling & Deployment
- Match volunteers to service users based on geography, technology expertise, and availability
- Coordinate deployment across telephone support, online support, group courses, peer support groups, hub locations, and home visits
- Track volunteer hours and ensure responsive allocation meeting target timelines
Retention, Recognition & Community Building
- Implement retention strategies and design recognition programmes celebrating achievements
- Create progression pathways and development opportunities for experienced volunteers
- Facilitate volunteer peer networks, coordinate regular learning sessions and knowledge sharing
- Build volunteer team identity through online forums, social events, newsletters, and communications
Administration & Reporting
- Maintain accurate volunteer records, database, and track recruitment, retention, and deployment metrics
- Prepare regular reports for Project Manager on volunteer programme health
- Gather volunteer feedback and identify opportunities to improve volunteer experience
Person Specification
Essential
- Proven experience recruiting, coordinating, and supporting volunteers
- Knowledge of DBS processes and safeguarding requirements
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to build rapport and trust quickly
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage multiple volunteers and priorities simultaneously
- Experience scheduling and deploying volunteers across different activities or locations
- Understanding of volunteer motivation, retention, and what makes volunteers feel valued
- Strong communication skills and comfortable using databases, scheduling systems, and digital tools
- Self-motivated and able to work independently in remote environment
Highly Desirable
- Experience building volunteer programmes or managing significant growth
