To support the wonderful work the team here do, we are looking to recruit some new trustees to our Board and broaden the range of knowledge and perspectives as we look forwards and ambitiously plan for resilience, inclusion, relevance and dynamism into the next 5 years.
Objectives
The Board is collectively responsible for the continuing success and sustainability of the Corn Exchange (Newbury) Trust - in line with the mission, objectives and values set out in The Trust’s strategic plans.
Each Trustee is a contributing part of the Board leadership group.
Each Trustee has a duty and responsibility for effectively governing the charity and directing how it is managed and run.
The Board must always act in the best interests of the Corn Exchange (Newbury) Trust acting as a group and being accountable for their performance.
Trustees will act as an ambassador for the Corn Exchange (Newbury) Trust.
A Trustee’s duties are:
- to contribute actively to the strategic direction of the organisation
- to ensure the charity is carrying out its objectives and purposes for public benefit
- to comply with the charity’s governing document and the law
- to manage the Charity’s resources responsibly
- to always act in the Charity’s best interests
- to always act with reasonable care and skill
- to ensure the Charity is accountable

Job description
We’re looking for a friendly, enthusiastic team player to join us on a casual basis. We currently have a team of 3 core staff and are looking for casual team members to cover occasional holidays and other absence. Available shifts would be circulated amongst casuals for which you can opt in to. As part of the housekeeping team, you will take ownership of the presentation of the Corn Exchange which welcomes tens of thousands of people every year. You’ll play an important part in making sure we provide our visitors with the best experience: You will take pride in your work and will help to deliver our audience commitments by creating a clean, hygienic, comfortable, and friendly environment that makes it welcoming, safe and encourages visitors to want to stay and spend more time with us. This role mainly involves morning shifts from 7am and shifts may be between 2 and 6 hours. The job is ideal for anyone looking for some extra hours alongside another job. Availability at weekends essential.

- Role:Customer Service Volunteer at the Old Library
- Reports to:Old Library Duty Manager
- Hours:Varied daytime and evening shifts. Approx 6 hour shifts between 7am and 10.30pm
Job description
The Old Library is due to open in Spring 2026 as an arts, culture and wellbeing space; a space for all the community to enjoy. There will be a programme of courses, workshops, events and professional performances. The venue will be relaxed, informal and welcoming; serving its visitors and the needs of local people.
We are looking for people who are seeking a meaningful opportunity, joining a small volunteer team, and can commit to being part of the fabric of this exciting new venue and support the running of the building.
Volunteers will be part of the Old Library team, working closely with the Duty Manager, providing a high-quality experience for visitors to the Old Library.
In this customer-facing role, you will welcome and help our visitors; understand the programme and be able to support visitors in booking and taking part; serve in café bar; support the smooth and efficient running of all public areas; and support the Duty Manager to ensure a safe and friendly environment.
Volunteers must have full knowledge of the safety and evacuation procedures, for which training will be provided and perform all tasks to a high standard of customer care.
Requirements
The skills and experience to demonstrate in your application are:
- A welcoming, friendly and open manner towards all visitors.
- Good communication skills, including the ability to understand and respond to written and spoken instructions and briefings.
- Good timekeeping with the ability to be reliable and commit to agreed/regular shifts.
- Confidence and ability to aid the Duty Manager with evacuation of the building. (Full training will be given).
- A polite and calm manner, able to manage unexpected situations.
- Enthusiasm for promoting and representing the Corn Exchange.
- You might have previous experience of working in hospitality, with an ability to accurately handle money and stock, but training can be provided.

The successful candidate will:
- Have at least 2 years of experience working in technical theatre in a theatre, arts centre or live performance environment
- Have a good understanding of generic and intelligent theatre lighting and their uses.
- Have a good understanding of technical plans such as lighting rig plans, channel lists and stage plots
- Have good computer Literacy and understanding of technical equipment/networking
- Have excellent communication skills
- Have an analytical approach to problem solving
