Project Communications Officer
CAT seeks a Project Communications Officer for the Troi’r Llanw / Turning The Tide project to lead communications and knowledge sharing for the project, producing high-quality bilingual written and visual content across a range of media, to share stories, inspire action and inform policy.
About CAT
The Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is an internationally renowned environmental charity, a world-leading eco centre, and one of the foremost providers of postgraduate environmental education in the UK, based near Machynlleth in Mid Wales.
CAT provides inspiration, education and training in solutions to the climate and biodiversity emergency.
Key activities include a visitor centre where groups can see solutions in action, residential short courses, vocational training and postgraduate degrees in a wide range of sustainability-related topics, with online courses and events offered alongside in-person learning.
This role is funded as part of the Troi’r Llanw / Turning the Tide project, which is funded thanks to the Climate Action Fund, a long-term commitment from The National Lottery Community Fund to support communities across the UK to act on climate change and involve more people in positive environmental action.

- Location: Regularly working at CAT’s eco centre, Machynlleth, Mid Wales with opportunity for some flexible home working.
- Part-time: 22.5 hours per week (0.6 FTE)
- Working Days: Normally between Monday to Friday, with occasional evening/weekend working.
Salary and employee benefits:
£25,155 p.a. pro rata (£15,093)

Overview of Role
Troi’r Llanw / Turning The Tide is a three-year, Wales-wide (bilingual) project funded by the National Lottery Community Fund, aimed at normalising community-led climate work and responses to climate change and environmental sustainability, ensuring marginalised voices shape environmental decisions, and helping people feel empowered in the face of the climate crisis. The project is led by the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) alongside Cwmpas, Youth Cymru, Mentrau Iaith Cymru, and Ethnic Minorities and Youth Support Team Wales (EYST).
The Project Communications Officer role is a key part of this project and will lead communications and knowledge sharing to inspire action and inform policy. The role will focus on producing high quality bilingual written and visual content across a range of media, including social media, video content, web content, promotional emails, printed materials, press releases, blog content and feature articles.
Working as part of the Troi’r Llanw / Turning The Tide project, you will be confident in producing written content in Welsh and English for different platforms and publications as well as capturing and sharing community insights, outcomes, learning and innovations to share with the project’s audiences.
The role will provide support for the promotion of all areas of the project, including working with partners, helping with online listings and other advertising, assisting with events at CAT and elsewhere.
The Project Communications Officer role will directly contribute to the outcomes of the project, including increasing visibility, engagement with and impact of the project, supporting knowledge sharing, and inspiring action and informing policy.
You will have experience in copywriting and editing, with a demonstrable ability to adapt your copy to suit different platforms and audiences, as well as being a strong proofreader with a good eye for detail.
We often work to tight deadlines, so you will be happy to work quickly and effectively to produce strong, impactful content in support of the marketing and communications strategy.
This is a key role in helping to support and promote CAT’s mission to inspire, inform and enable humanity to respond to the climate and biodiversity emergency.
Main Purpose and Responsibilities
General duties
- Contribution to marketing and communications strategy and planning.
- Contribution to CAT-wide media, communications and marketing work as required.
- Provision of assistance and cover for others in the team as required.
- Assistance with administrative duties including invoice coding, timesheets and all other paperwork.
- Any other appropriate duties as defined by the Project Manager and Co-Heads of Marketing and Communications.
- Contribution to the project marketing and communications plan including Sourcing and production of high-quality content in support of communications and marketing plans.
Duties Specific to Project Communications Officer
- Create and tell inspiring impact stories from the project and beyond.
- Write, copyedit and proofread high-quality bilingual project related content, including blogs and articles for CAT-owned and external platforms.
- Plan and capture bilingual video and photo content from project activities at CAT and elsewhere for the purposes of promotion and communications campaigns.
- Contribution to project media and marketing work as required.
- Manage and source content for the digital knowledge hub.
- Support all aspects of the project promotion, including attending events and fairs, placing adverts and updating online listings, and promotion through external mailing lists, flyers, posters and writing presentations.
- Work with CAT’s Digital and Print Designer to help produce print and digital advertising.
- Work with CAT’s Digital Marketing officer to manage CAT’s web content.
- Work closely with project partners to maximise the effectiveness of communications.
- Keep up to date with environmental issues and solutions.
- Undertake daily administrative tasks to support the project’s communication activities.
- Respond to project communication enquiries made online, by phone and in person.
- Track and monitor where publications, blogs and project findings are reported.
- Working with the project Co-ordinator and Research, Resource and Policy Manager share insights and outcomes from community led climate initiatives to support the influence of the project on policy and practice.
