Job description

The University of Stavanger invites applicants for a position as Professor in Regional Innovation at the UiS School of Business and Law, Department of Innovation, Management and Marketing. The position is open for appointment from 1 August 2026.

The subject area for the position is regional innovation with focus on economic transformation.

The hired candidate will primarily teach and supervise students at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD level within the subject area, conduct research and disseminate research results within relevant research areas at the department, and contribute to the development of partnerships with businesses.

It is expected that the hired candidate initiates, provides external funding to, leads and conducts major research and development projects. The Professor will also lead the development and use of digital and diverse learning methods, innovation, value creation based on results from research and academic work.

The professor will be part of the research group at the Centre for Innovation Research, which is an interdisciplinary centre for research on innovation across faculties at UiS and NORCE. The candidate is expected to contribute to the academic community at the centre through active participation in seminars, mentoring junior faculty, and acquiring funding for, leading and participating in joint research projects with colleagues at the centre and beyond. The candidate is also expected to contribute to furthering the centre’s interaction with external stakeholders in academic, policy, industry and civil society.

The professor will contribute to the development of the new master programme in Economic Transformation and Innovation at the UiS School of Business and Law. The programme offers an interdisciplinary postgraduate education which combines economics, management and public policy to address the challenges of economic transformation of industries and regions.

Qualification requirements

We are seeking a Professor with a high level of scientific expertise in accordance with established professorship standards within the subject area and the university’s general criteria for employment as a professor.

The academic field for the position is at the intersection of regional studies, innovation studies and/or economic geography, and we are looking for candidates specialising in topics related to economic transformation and innovation. The candidates should conduct research with the potential to inform public policy for innovation, economic development and regional development.

You must be able to document active, ongoing research at a high academic level and have the potential for future high-level research within the subject area.

It is expected that you have a reflective and conscious approach to your own teaching and supervision. You must have basic competence for teaching and supervision in higher education, normally documented by 200 hours of courses in university-/college teaching combined with teaching practice. If you do not meet this requirement you must complete university pedagogy courses within two years from accession.

Norwegian is the main language at UiS. The working and teaching languages are Norwegian and English. You must be able to teach and supervise in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language at a minimum level B2. If you do not meet the requirement, you must complete Norwegian language courses to achieve this level within three years of appointment.

Courses in university pedagogy and Norwegian are offered by the university.

  • ability to involve and engage students so that course objectives, content and assessment situations are closely interlinked
  • experience and/or interest in developing varied learning methods and digital tools in teaching
  • record of disseminating research in recognised Norwegian and international publications, evidence of progression in research and publication and that you are motivated to promote open research and the intrinsic value of research (Open Science).
  • experience of partnerships with businesses relevant for the subject area
  • contributed to the use of research-based knowledge in society and that you can refer to results from innovation and the commercialisation of research
  • experience with relevant international research networks and the ability to build and nurture networks—regionally, nationally and internationally
  • ability to manage a heavy workload, inquisitiveness, and motivation to the development of academic and interdisciplinary collaboration at the university
  • good teamwork and communication skills, and ability to contribute to a constructive work environment
