Mexico and Central America Regional Editor

Location: Mexico preferred but elsewhere within Central America will be considered for candidates with strong knowledge of Mexico and networks within the country.
Position: Mexico and Central America regional editor
Hours: 16 hours/2 days per week
Contract type: 12 month contract (subject to renewal). We cannot support working visas for this position.
Fee: $225
Start time: As soon as possible

Introduction:

Dialogue Earth is seeking an Mexico and Central America editor to join its Latin America team. The editor will play a key role in commissioning and editing articles on the most pressing environment and climate issues in Mexico and Central America, particularly in regards to China’s role on the continent, and help formulate editorial strategy. The editor will work closely with Dialogue Earth’s existing Latin America editorial team, a network of freelancers across the continent, and with colleagues in London and across our regional hubs.

The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in reporting and editing, as well as a keen interest in climate and environmental issues, China, Latin America and international affairs. They will be proactive, highly organised and self-motivated, and can recognise an interesting story that will grab a reader’s attention. We expect the candidate to be well-connected, with relevant professional experience and have excellent writing, editing and verbal communications skills, an aptitude for digital technology and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

About us

Dialogue Earth is a not-for-profit organisation that is independent of any government. Dialogue Earth promotes communication on the environment and climate change in multiple languages. We aim to foster a common purpose across political, ideological and cultural boundaries by publishing independent and accurate information on environmental and climate issues, and by facilitating tolerant and constructive dialogue.

Main Responsibilities:

● Writing, researching, commissioning and editing original Latin America content for the Dialogue Earth website;
Managing AI-assisted translation processes and editing translated content to ensure accuracy, consistency and adherence to editorial standards;
● Liaising with the Latin America Editor and Latin America Managing Editor, and with broader Dialogue Earth editorial teams on joint editorial projects and themes of mutual interest;Developing syndication and content-sharing relationships with local, regional and vernacular media;

Working with the Social Media team to form a regional communications strategy to raise the profile of Latin America content on Dialogue Earth.

Liaising with project partners and other existing project contacts to build a regional network of contributors and a dedicated readership.


Essential experience, knowledge and skills:

Excellent research, writing and editing skills; Experience of managing stories and freelance reporters, preparing and developing story briefs, providing feedback and editing first drafts; 

Familiarity with the political, economic and governance contexts shaping environmental and climate issues in Mexico and Central America;

Editorial judgement in commissioning, shaping and editing stories on environmental, climate and development issues, with the ability to identify high-impact angles ranging from timely news and analysis to in-depth and investigative reporting;

Experience in web publishing, social media and/or digital tools;

A high level of proficiency in English and working knowledge of local languages;

Strong project management and problem-solving skills;

Flexibility and ability to multitask, with strong verbal and cross-cultural communication skills;

Ability to work independently. This work is remote, and requires a significant amount of communication over email and Google Meet, as well as engagement with organisational workflow tools.

Desirable experience, knowledge and skills:

an understanding of how Chinese trade and investment is impacting the region on a geopolitical and environmental level; Interest in or knowledge of China and international affairs;

Chinese language skills would be an asset.
