About the role

We know that having someone to talk to about the things that might be causing stress or worry can help. This service offers people who struggle to get out of the house and are isolated emotional support via the telephone.

As a Listening Ear Volunteer, you will offer emotional support and listen without judgement. You will provide a safe and confidential space and won’t tell the people we support what to do, but empower them to explore their available options.

You will:

  • Build rapport with each person you support so they are able to open up.
  • For each person you are supporting; provide one emotional support call each week for up to 1 hour in length. We offer six calls per person.
  • De-brief with a supervisor after each call sharing any concern.
  • Signpost to Manchester Mind’s services or external services when appropriate.
  • Maintain confidentiality unless a safeguarding issue presents.
  • Help us to improve the service that we provide.
  • Attend training when required.

All application documents can be downloaded from the box on the right.

This recruitment will remain open until we have filled our current vacancies.

Please note that the application, interview, reference request, DBS process and training can take 2-3 months. We expect successful applicants to be starting in role from December 2026.
