The Vacancy
Turn complex ideas into compelling visual stories.
At MOLA, design is about more than making things look good. It’s about making ideas clearer, information more engaging and important work impossible to overlook.
Our work brings together archaeology, research, heritage and data, often involving complex ideas and detailed information. Good design helps us make that work accessible, engaging and meaningful to the people who encounter it.
We’re looking for a Graphic Designer to join our Data team and bring creativity, craft and curiosity to a genuinely varied portfolio of work.
You could be designing an academic monograph one day, a client report the next, then turning your attention to hoardings, digital content, internal communications or something completely unexpected. It’s a role that combines thoughtful editorial design with information-led work, brand development and the practical craft of getting great ideas out into the world.
We’re looking for someone who enjoys moving between the big picture and the smallest detail — developing a concept, finding the right visual language, refining a layout and making sure the finished piece is as considered and effective as the original idea.
You’ll also be an important voice for design across MOLA: helping colleagues think visually, advising on creative solutions and championing our brand, accessibility and quality standards.
What you’ll do
Make information stand out
- Turn complex information, ideas and research into engaging visual outputs for public and client audiences.
- Create high-quality work across print and digital, balancing creativity with brand, accessibility and practical requirements.
- Take publications and other projects from concept through to final artwork and print, including art direction, typesetting, layout, proofing and print production.
- Develop effective visual solutions for books, reports, campaigns, hoardings, digital content and internal communications.
- Bring curiosity and fresh thinking to briefs, finding creative ways to communicate information and ideas.
Shape how we design
- Be a trusted design adviser across MOLA, helping colleagues identify the right visual approach for their projects.
- Champion our brand and ensure our visual identity is used consistently, thoughtfully and creatively.
- Develop and maintain templates that help teams produce high-quality, consistent outputs themselves.
- Help develop and rationalise our illustration archive, keeping it a useful and evolving creative resource.
- Work with the Public Impact Team to enhance the visual identity and product range of our online store.
Bring ideas to life
- Work closely with project managers and colleagues across MOLA to understand briefs, agree priorities, estimate budgets and plan realistic timelines.
- Manage multiple projects and changing priorities while maintaining a high standard of creative and production work.
- Communicate clearly with colleagues and stakeholders, raising challenges, competing priorities or potential delays early.
- Share your expertise in visual design, publishing and print production to help teams make confident creative decisions.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for someone who combines creative ambition with excellent production skills.
You’ll have:
- Significant professional experience as a graphic designer, with a portfolio that demonstrates creative thinking, strong visual judgement and exceptional attention to detail.
- Strong experience using Adobe Creative Cloud.
- Experience designing for print, particularly publications, reports or books, with a strong understanding of typesetting, layout, artwork preparation and print production.
- A good understanding of branding and the ability to work within — and creatively interpret — brand guidelines.
- Experience creating accessible design for different audiences and formats.
- The ability to take a brief, understand the underlying objective, challenge it constructively where appropriate and turn it into an effective visual solution.
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines and stakeholders.
- The confidence to explain your thinking, communicate creative ideas and advise colleagues on design.
- A collaborative and flexible approach, with the ability to move between very different types of work as priorities change.
Most importantly, you’ll care about the detail without losing sight of the bigger picture. You’ll be excited by variety, comfortable working with complex subject matter and motivated by the challenge of making information both beautiful and meaningful.
Why MOLA?
This is an opportunity to make your mark on how MOLA communicates visually.
You’ll work across a fascinating mix of archaeological, research and heritage subject matter, with the chance to influence how design is used across the organisation. One week might involve shaping a book from first concept to printed publication; the next could involve developing a client report, creating a new template or brand application, or solving a completely different visual challenge.
You’ll have genuine creative variety, the opportunity to work with colleagues across the organisation and the space to bring your own ideas, experience and point of view to the role.
The role can be based at any of our offices. You will be required to work from one of MOLA’s offices, with hybrid working also considered by agreement.
