The Gardener & Maintenance Technician is responsible for maintaining the school's grounds, gardens, outdoor facilities, and supporting general campus maintenance activities. The role ensures that all outdoor areas are safe, attractive, functional, and well-presented while assisting with routine maintenance, contractor coordination, inspections, and compliance requirements.

Gardener & Maintenance Technician

Job Description

Reports to: Maintenance Manager

Type of contract: Permanent, full-time

Hours: 7am – 3pm which includes a 30-minute break, 5 days a week,

Place of Work: Upper School and Lower School (each site is a 3-minute walk from the other)

Holidays: 30 days per calendar year (pro-rata)

Position Overview:

We are looking for a Gardener to join our experienced team working across the whole school. The successful candidate will have the ability to work within a team and experience as a gardener is essential. This position combines a passion for gardening and environmental stewardship. The Gardener is also responsible for maintaining and developing the school’s outdoor areas, coordinating gardening activities and collaborating with the maintenance and cleaning team. The ideal candidate will also speak Greek and English at a conversational level.

Key Responsibilities:

Grounds and Landscape Maintenance

• Maintain gardens, landscaped areas, lawns, sports fields, courtyards, pathways, and external grounds to a high standard throughout the year.

• Perform routine horticultural duties including planting, watering, pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilising, propagation, seasonal planting, and turf care.

• Maintain sports facilities, outdoor planter displays, and decorative planting arrangements for school events.

• Keep external areas clean, tidy, and free from litter, leaves, debris, and hazards.

• Safely apply pesticides, herbicides, fertilisers, and other treatments in accordance with legislation and school procedures.

• Ensure outdoor circulation areas remain safe during adverse weather conditions, including snow, ice, and slip prevention measures.

Maintenance and Facilities Support

• Carry out minor maintenance, repair, and general upkeep tasks across the campus.

• Conduct routine inspections of buildings, grounds, equipment, and infrastructure, reporting defects, maintenance needs, and safety concerns.

• Assist with the setup and dismantling of facilities, furniture, equipment, and infrastructure for school activities and events.

• Maintain tools, machinery, equipment, and work areas in a safe, clean, and serviceable condition.

Contractor and Supplier Coordination

• Obtain quotations and assist with the evaluation of suppliers and contractors for grounds maintenance and related services.

• Coordinate and monitor contractors on site to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with school standards.

• Inspect completed works, report findings, and support continuous improvement and costefficiency initiatives.

Health, Safety and Compliance

• Conduct regular inspections and risk assessments of grounds and assigned areas to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.

• Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with school policies, health and safety procedures, and relevant legislation.

• Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and promote a safe environment for staff, students, visitors, and contractors.

Administration and Reporting

• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, treatments, repairs, contractor works, and stock usage.

• Prepare reports relating to grounds maintenance, facilities condition, health and safety observations, and supplier performance.

• Monitor inventory levels and support budget control through expenditure tracking and procurement requests.

General Responsibilities

• Maintain professional and positive working relationships with students, staff, parents, visitors, contractors, and suppliers.

Support the school's sustainability and environmental initiatives.

Participate in training and professional development activities.

• Undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the role and operational requirements.
