In this newly created role, we are looking for a Scientific Communications Manager to support our Atlas of Variant Effects (AVE) project. You will work alongside the Director of Progamme Operations (based at the University of Washington in the US) and with members of the Alliance’s UK Executive Committee to establish and deliver an overarching AVE communications strategy. You will ensure proper preparation of internal and external communications to ensure AVE’s accomplishments are published appropriately and to grow the Alliance’s online presence and engagement with critical audiences.
You will also be expected to assist with scientific writing specifically for, but not limited to, the UK Executive Office (EO). This part time post will be located within the AVE UK base at the Wellcome Sanger Institute at Hinxton, near Cambridge for a 2 year fixed term contract.
About Us:
The AVE Project is an international collaborative project with the aim of creating an atlas and assessing the effects of all the possible variants of human genes in the genome. The Alliance is spearheading efforts to advance the use of mutational scanning technologies. It is a collaboration of multiple institutes including the University of Washington, the Brotman Baty Institute, Stanford University and the Broad Institute among others, with 500 members from 105 institutes and 30 countries.What you'll be doing:

Developing a communications strategy, working in partnership with the Director for Progamme Operations and the Alliance Communications group as well as senior AVE leadership.

Working collaboratively across the Alliance to craft and curate all internal and external communications to ensure AVE scientists feel a sense of belonging and to create impactful content that engages with the public on AVE achievements across all channels.

Engaging with AVE leadership to advise on communications matters and achieve buy-in for the overall communications strategy.

Translating complex scientific information into engaging material for the general public.

Working independently on AVE related articles ensuring that they are in line with the AVE branding guidelines/mission.

Crafting, developing and managing all internal communication materials ensuring these are of a high-quality.

Developing and managing email marketing campaigns .

Developing and planning a social media calendar of activity across all external communications channels e.g. Newsletter, Slack, Twitter, BlueSky, Youtube.

Creating, devising a suite of key metrics to track the impact of the communications strategy and adapting as necessary.
About You:
You will experience in scientific communications and will have the ability to work across different time zones with collaborators across the globe. You enjoy translating complex scientific information into accessible content for diverse audiences. You will be part of our Cancer, Ageing and Somatic Mutation Programme contributing to our mission of advancing understanding and driving impact through clear engaging communications.Essential Skills:

Degree-level in science or humanities or demonstrable equivalent skills and experience

Previous experience in scientific writing, gained in an academic or professional environment

Previous experience of producing clear and accurate communications

Excellent communicator with good interpersonal skills

Ability to manage and organise time

Ability to adapt communications style to audience

Ability to build excellent working partnerships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels

Salary per annum (dependent upon your skills and experience): £40,232-£47,796 full time equivalent. The actual salary will be pro-rated to reflect your part time hours.
Working Hours: 18.5 hours per week, can be flexible
