This is an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic, fast-paced operational team at Southport & Ormskirk Hospital Hospitals. We are looking for a proactive and positive individual with experience of working in an operational role within a clinical setting.

The Operational Services Manager plays a crucial role within the Directorate, working closely with the Radiology Manager to ensure efficient and effective operational management for each of the Directorate Services and to support the Directorate's strategic agenda.

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills and will have the ability to forge and maintain good working relationships with colleagues. 

The ability to manage a very busy workload is essential, as is the ability to quickly find solutions and to identify and focus on critical issues when decision making.

The JD & PS are currently under AfC review and are subject to change

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that national and local targets are delivered relating to Diagnostic 6 weeks, Caner targets & RTT, plus ensuring that the quality of care is of the highest standard and that resources within the Directorate are managed efficiently and effectively.

The successful applicant will gain exposure to a wide range of issues at both an operational and strategic level. This will include leading on key projects to support the delivery of the Directorate's objectives.  To support the day-to-day operational management to the departments/areas of defined
specialties and in doing so contribute to the delivery of corporate and national performance targets in these areas.

In association with the Directorate Manager, contribute to the financial budget control/management responsibility for each operational area and work closely with the Matrons with the management of these budgets.

To work with Clinical Leads/Directors of the relevant departments to ensure the overall effective use of resources and continuous improvements in service delivery.

To lead and support service improvement agenda of the defined specialties in conjunction with the NHS Modernisation Agenda.

To support the Trust’s corporate objectives and the processes by which they are achieved, including Clinical Governance, Controls Assurance, Risk Management and Capacity Planning.


To maintain an overview of medical staffing and ensure Doctors’ rotas are compliant with statutory requirements and in doing so, in conjunction with the medical staffing lead for the Division, co-ordinate the medical staffing requirements in the individual departments.

In conjunction with the Business Analysts, collate information/data in order to produce reports (eg, capacity/demand analysis) for Theatre productivity/utilisation data management meetings which will include detailed analysis and interpretation of information relating to services within the Division.

To ensure compliance to all Trust Risk Management, Research Governance and Infection Control policies and procedures and abide by the standards for Better Health.

Undertake appropriate mandatory training in infection control and comply with all Trust Infection Control policies relevant to the post, particularly with regard to the hand hygiene policy.

Take responsibility for managing their own health and wellbeing.

To support the Clinical Lead/Directors and Clinical Governance Leads embedding Clinical Governance and Risk Management within the Division.

To liaise directly as required with patients or their family in issues relating to admission, discharge, complaints, and appointments.

  • Advanced IT skills – ECDL or equivalent
  • Degree or equivalent experience
