About Merchant Taylors’ School

Merchant Taylors’ School in Crosby, Liverpool, is one of the North West’s most respected
independent schools, educating girls and boys aged 4 to 18. With over 400 years of history and a
reputation for excellence, we are proud to be a school that honours tradition while embracing
innovation.

As of September 2025, we are a fully co-educational school across all age groups, creating a
unified and inclusive learning community. Our closely connected sites include:

Stanfield Preparatory School – Coeducational, Reception to Year 6

•
• Merchant Taylors’ Senior School – Coeducational, Years 7 to 13, based at the Harrison

Site

This strategic transformation marks a new chapter in our history, one that is defined by
ambition, collaboration, and a commitment to excellence. We are investing significantly in our
estate, curriculum, and staff development to ensure that every pupil receives an education that
prepares them not just for exams, but for life.

At Merchant Taylors’, we believe that outstanding schools are built by outstanding people. Our
staff, both teaching and professional services, are central to our success. We value creativity,
initiative, and a shared commitment to nurturing young minds. We offer:

• A forward-thinking and supportive working environment
• Opportunities for professional growth and leadership
• A culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement
• A strong sense of community, underpinned by Christian values of compassion, respect,

and integrity

Our Strategic Direction 2025–2030 sets out a bold vision: to be the leading independent school
in Merseyside. We are committed to outreach, inclusion, and educational excellence, and we
seek colleagues who share our passion for shaping the future of education.

If you are motivated by purpose, inspired by challenge, and committed to making a difference,
we invite you to join us.

The Vacancy

We are seeking to recruit an inspirational, enthusiastic and self-reflective Teacher of Science,
ideally with a Chemistry specialism, to start employment in February 2026. The role would suit
an experienced teacher, an NQT or a recent graduate who is considering a career in teaching.
Depending on experience, the role potentially involves teaching Chemistry to A Level; the ability
to teach all three sciences to GCSE level would be an advantage.

Competent ICT skills are necessary since members of staff are each furnished with a Microsoft
Surface Pro for use within and away from school and these can be used in tandem with
smartboards in classrooms.

There is an expectation that you will participate in and contribute to the co-curricular life of the
School as a whole. In return, the School is committed to helping you develop further as a
teacher by supporting you with appropriate professional development.

We are looking for someone who:

• Brings energy, creativity, and a commitment to excellence in the classroom
• Values collaboration and is eager to contribute to a supportive and forward-thinking

team
Is committed to continuous professional development and innovation in teaching
Shares our values of Ambition, Character, and Excellence

•
•

All staff are equipped with a Microsoft Surface Pro and benefit from smartboard-enabled
classrooms, so strong digital literacy is essential. We are committed to using technology
meaningfully to enhance learning and engagement.

At Merchant Taylors’, education extends far beyond the classroom. We expect all colleagues to
play an active role in the co-curricular life of the School, whether through sport, music, drama,
outdoor education, or service to others. In return, we offer a rich programme of professional
development, leadership pathways, and a culture that values initiative, curiosity, and growth.

This is more than a teaching role, it is a chance to be part of a school that is shaping the future
with purpose and integrity.

The Department

The aims of the Chemistry Department are to promote a lifelong enjoyment of the subject and
to stretch each pupil to the full extent of their capability. Currently, the Chemistry Department
has four members of teaching staff, who are subject specialists, and a full-time technician. It is a
cohesive department that supports each other in all aspects and who believe in the sharing of
good practice and resources. The department also work very well in close collaboration with the
other science departments.

All pupils take General Science in Years 7 and 8 and separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology in
Year 9. The options system offers the sciences as 3 separate GCSEs or as Trilogy Science at GCSE.
Currently the AQA specification is followed, with the exception of separate Physics which
follows the Edexcel IGCSE.

Chemistry is a very popular A Level choice with typically two sets in both Lower and Upper Sixth
taking the subject. Currently the AQA specification is followed. In 2025, at A Level, the A*-B rate
was 61%.

The Department has excellent facilities with three specialist chemistry laboratories as well as a
general science laboratory, a prep room, a computer room and a departmental office. Each

member of staff has their own Surface Pro device and ICT is widely used in the department. All
laboratories have a SMART board.

The Chemistry Department strongly believe that teaching should be backed up by practical
investigative work and carry out many experiments to help engage pupils and develop their
practical skills. To help do so, our laboratories are serviced by a very well-qualified technician
who efficiently supplies practical equipment and supports teachers in the delivery of the
curriculum.

Enrichment and extracurricular activities are central to life within the Chemistry Department,
and we strongly encourage pupils to take part. Such activities include:

• RSC Top of the Bench Competition

•

L6th Cambridge Challenge Competition

• U6th Chemistry Olympiad

• Sixth form University visits

•

Lower School (KS3) Science Club

• Chemistry clinics
