The Vacancy We are seeking to recruit an inspirational, enthusiastic and self-reflective Teacher of Science, ideally with a Chemistry specialism, to start employment in February 2026. The role would suit an experienced teacher, an NQT or a recent graduate who is considering a career in teaching. Depending on experience, the role potentially involves teaching Chemistry to A Level; the ability to teach all three sciences to GCSE level would be an advantage. 2 Competent ICT skills are necessary since members of staff are each furnished with a Microsoft Surface Pro for use within and away from school and these can be used in tandem with smartboards in classrooms. There is an expectation that you will participate in and contribute to the co-curricular life of the School as a whole. The Department The aims of the Chemistry Department are to promote a lifelong enjoyment of the subject and to stretch each pupil to the full extent of their capability. Currently, the Chemistry Department has four members of teaching staff, who are subject specialists, and a full-time technician. It is a cohesive department that supports each other in all aspects and who believe in the sharing of good practice and resources. The department also work very well in close collaboration with the other science departments. All pupils take General Science in Years 7 and 8 and separate Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Year 9. The options system offers the sciences as 3 separate GCSEs or as Trilogy Science at GCSE. Currently the AQA specification is followed, with the exception of separate Physics which follows the Edexcel IGCSE. Chemistry is a very popular A Level choice with typically two sets in both Lower and Upper Sixth taking the subject. Currently the AQA specification is followed. In 2025, at A Level, the A*-B rate was 61%. The Department has excellent facilities with three specialist chemistry laboratories as well as a general science laboratory, a prep room, a computer room and a departmental office. Each 3 member of staff has their own Surface Pro device and ICT is widely used in the department. All laboratories have a SMART board. The Chemistry Department strongly believe that teaching should be backed up by practical investigative work and carry out many experiments to help engage pupils and develop their practical skills. To help do so, our laboratories are serviced by a very well-qualified technician who efficiently supplies practical equipment and supports teachers in the delivery of the curriculum. Enrichment and extracurricular activities are central to life within the Chemistry Department, and we strongly encourage pupils to take part. Such activities include: • RSC Top of the Bench Competition • L6th Cambridge Challenge Competition • U6th Chemistry Olympiad • Sixth form University visits • Lower School (KS3) Science Club • Chemistry clinics Terms and Conditions The successful candidate will be rewarded on the Merchant Taylors’ teachers pay scale with a salary commensurate with their experience and skills. Management roles will be rewarded though the additional payment of a management allowance. This a part time position on a fixed term basis for maternity cover.
