Birmingham Newman University is seeking a proactive and student-focused Learning Development Manager to coordinate and lead the delivery of academic and study skills support across the institution.

This key role sits within the Student Success team and works closely with academic departments to embed support into and around the curriculum. The postholder will lead group workshops, provide expert 1:1 learning support, and develop a suite of digital resources to enhance student learning and confidence. A central aspect of the role is working with students identified as retention risks or those capable of achieving higher grades with targeted support—contributing directly to the University’s Retention Framework.

This full-time position includes line management of the Learning Support Tutor and casual staff during peak periods. The role also collaborates with the Head of Digital Learning and Library colleagues to integrate digital skills and responsible AI usage into assessment preparation. From time to time, the postholder will contribute to university-wide projects focused on student outcomes and learning and teaching enhancement.

The ideal candidate will have substantial experience in academic support and learning development, including designing and delivering inclusive learning interventions. Strong leadership and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to manage staff and collaborate across departments. A sound understanding of digital learning tools, including AI in education, and a commitment to improving student retention and success are key to thriving in this role.

Informal enquiries about this opportunity are very welcome. Please contact Lance White, at L.White@staff.newman.ac.uk, to discuss the role further.
