Experience Maker Volunteer - Summer Holidays

At WWT, we believe that the best way for people to understand and connect to wetlands is to experience them, so we bring awe-inspiring nature up close. We are looking for friendly, outgoing volunteers to support visitor activities over the summer holidays, bringing experiences to life! You will be directly involved in shaping unforgettable visitor encounters through your warm welcome, positive interactions, and the educational information & activities that you provide.

Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team, and we wouldn’t be able to maintain our internationally important wetland sites without their help. You will receive a very warm welcome, full induction & training, and be provided with the necessary equipment, uniform, and anything else needed to thrive in your role.

Main tasks

This summer Martin Mere has a range of activities available for visitors, so this role would involve:

• Assisting with the running of our “Mere Tun Village” – a living history village that shows how people settled next to wetlands for food, materials, and livelihood. This activity includes a weapons training activity. It takes place every Monday & Tuesday from 12-3pm
• Assisting with the visitor service desk – meeting and greeting visitors on arrival, selling bird food
• Undertaking moth trapping activities, otter talks, and flamingo talks
• Assisting with the running of the canoe safari – giving health & safety talks, fitting buoyancy aids to visitors, ensuring safety and fun of those participating

This role would be ideally suited to someone looking for a short-term volunteering experience to gain skills, for example a student wanting to improve their university application or CV. No previous experience is required for this role as full training will be provided, and a willingness to learn new skills is more important.

This role would suit you if:

• You are confident or experienced in talking to members of the public
• You are able to work well in a team of staff and volunteers
• You have experience in a visitor services environment
• You have a strong commitment to excellent customer service
• You have experience in canoeing (advantage)

Role practicalities

We are particularly looking for volunteers who are available to help out 1-2 days a week from mid-July until end of August. This role is not suitable for people under 18 years.

We are WWT, and we’re on a mission to restore the super-powered ecosystems we call wetlands. There’s never been a more important moment for our work, and we’ve got some phenomenal people on the case.
