Estuary Project Officer Job Description Salary: £28,500 Location: Hartlepool Purpose To work in a team delivering a programme of works to reintroduce native estuarine species and habitats in the Tees Estuary. The Project Officer will support the Trust team in a broad range of tasks including fieldwork, surveying, management planning, monitoring and sampling. The individual we are looking for will be an experienced team player with a strong aptitude for project delivery. Based within Tees Rivers Trust’s small team, you will have excellent opportunities to work collaboratively within a friendly, multi-disciplinary team of conservation professionals. You will work in a mobile and agile way to deliver the aims of the project programme. Main objectives of the role include: - Recreation of estuarine habitat through trialling the restoration of native oysters, mussels, sea grass and seaweed farming. - Contribute towards the reintroduction of several estuarine species to the Tees. Main Duties & Responsibilities • Work with the Trust’s estuary team in the development, expansion and daily running of the estuary nursery in Hartlepool. • Work closely with external stakeholders to enable smooth delivery of estuarine restoration • Assist with all aspects of seagrass husbandry and production including preparation, growing, and harvesting. • Contribute to the smooth running of our seagrass and native oyster nursery systems and site. • Responsible for undertaking all required daily monitoring checks within the nursery • Maintaining and checking mariculture equipment and reporting back to the Project Manager and Technical Lead • Responsible for the appropriate and safe use and maintenance of field survey and other scientific equipment for use on projects • To attend regular internal and external meetings as required. • To work in a flexible manner and to undertake any other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time, which are commensurate with the grade of the job. • To carry out all of the above duties with full regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities, Non- Discrimination, Safeguarding, Environmental, Health and Safety policies. Our ideal candidate will have at least 3 years’ experience working with similar projects. You will be either educated to degree level or equivalent, or have relevant work experience in an appropriate subject such as ecology, biology, marine biology or environmental science. Experience & Knowledge Essential Minimum of 3 years delivering marine conservation projects Extensive and current knowledge of estuarine processes, estuarine habitats, habitat restoration and saltwater ecology. Experience and knowledge of seagrass, mussel or native oyster ecology. Right to work in the UK (proof of this will be sought ahead of interview). Desirable Experience of working in a site based environment with nursery systems Knowledge of the legal framework of Protected Sites in the UK would be an advantage . An understanding of current issues facing the estuarine environment of the Tees and the surrounding coastal areas. Communication Skills Essential Good technical report writing and presentation skills. Experience in using a wide range of communication methods, including use of social media Good interpersonal skills with a wide range of people. Ability to build strong working relationships within the Trust and with external partners/organisations. Personal Attributes Essential Excellent organisational skills, self-motivation and ability to progress work with limited supervision. Ability to work to tight deadlines and prioritise workload. A keen interest in, and firm commitment to, conservation and ecology. Enthusiasm for outside working in all weathers A positive team player who is willing to play their part in achieving team targets. Flexible and adaptable approach with ability to be pragmatic and find creative solutions to problems. Full driving licence and access to own vehicle for work purposes. Comfortable lone working where necessary. Able to work occasional weekends and evenings where necessary.
