The Royal Economic Society is currently seeking applications for the position of Editor-in-Chief of The Econometrics Journal. The new Editor-in-Chief will begin the role from May 2026, when the current Editor’s term ends, and it is anticipated they will serve two consecutive 3-year terms.
Background
The Econometrics Journal was established in 1998 by the Royal Economic Society to promote the general advancement and application of econometric methods and techniques to problems of relevance to modern economics.
The Journal aims to publish high quality research papers relevant to contemporary econometrics in which primary emphasis is placed on important and original contributions of substantive direct or potential value in applications. The Econometrics Journal is particularly interested in path-breaking articles in econometrics and empirical economics that address leading cases rather than provide an exhaustive treatment.
The editorial process of The Econometrics Journal is overseen by the Editor-in-Chief (formerly known as the Managing Editor) and the Editors (formerly Co-Editors), with the help of an editorial office. The editorial board is complemented by first-rate econometricians from around the world who, as Associate Editors, act as ambassadors, advisors, and referees.
The Royal Economic Society is seeking to appoint an Editor-in-Chief to oversee The Econometrics Journal and manage the editorial team. The current Managing Editor, Jaap Abbring, will complete his final term at the end of April 2026. It is anticipated that the next Editor will be appointed to serve two consecutive 3-year terms.

- Collating the views of the Editors on where the search for new editorial appointments should be directed and communicating these to the Publications Committee to conduct the search.
- Onboarding new Editors: keeping the induction document up-to-date and providing a demonstration on how to use the manuscript management system.
- Keeping the Journal’s guidelines and policies up to date.
- Ensuring the Journal’s replication policy is adhered to, coordinating with the Data Editor where necessary.
- All administrative tasks related to the management of the Journal, including assessing the choice of manuscript management system, and leading on the preparation of the Annual Report on the Journal’s activities and the annual budget.
- Taking responsibility and decisions over day-to-day issues related to the publisher and the regular functioning of the Journal (e.g. typesetting, length of issues).
- Ensuring the implementation of the Journal’s ethics policies and relationship with COPE and being the default point of contact among the editors for the complaints and appeals.
