TRUSTEE OPPORTUNITIESThis is a wonderful opportunity to join a committed team of Trustees who shape thestrategy of PHQ and monitor progress on the delivery of that strategy, providingsupport, challenge and advice to a small executive management team. We areseeking to appoint three new Trustees to our Board before the end of the year.WHAT WE DOAs custodians of historic buildings, boats and spaces in and around PortsmouthHarbour, we breathe new life into this Naval heritage, creating energy and vibrancy,ensuring that it is sustainable and accessible for all. We actively create authentic,educational and enjoyable places, experiences and opportunities.We are an ambitious and collaborative charity. We work closely with key sitestakeholders and tenants to ensure smooth operations, shared understanding, andthe development and successful delivery of experiences and outcomes that benefitour organisations and visitors.We play a vital and creative role in the conservation, regeneration and interpretationof our two sites, the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and Priddy’s Hard in Gosport,working to preserve the historic fabric of the sites as well as enhancing understandingof the people who built, lived, and worked in the area. As well as buildings, we restore and operate a flotilla of historically significant vessels,ranging from a D-Day motor gunboat to a Boer War steam cutter. As an organisationwe are a property regeneration agency, a landlord, an asset manager and a culturalleader. PHQ currently has thirty two paid employees and one hundred volunteers.TRUSTEE INFORMATION PACKTHE ROLE OF TRUSTEEThe Board of Trustees set the strategic direction of the charity and decidehow it is run. The main duty of all charity Trustees is to advance thepurposes of their charity for public benefit. Each Trustee should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience theyhave to help the Board of Trustees reach sound decisions. They should beambassadors for PHQ, safeguarding our values and good name. Inaddition, they have the following statutory duties to:Contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role of providing clearstrategic direction to the Trust, setting overall policy, defining goals andobjectives and evaluating performance against these.Ensure that the Trust complies with its governing document, charity law,company law and any other relevant legislation or regulation.Ensure that the Trust performs its charitable purposes (charitableobjects) as set out in its governing document.Ensure that the Trust applies its resources exclusively to theperformance of its charitable objectives. Ensure the financial stability of the Trust.Ensure the effective and efficient administration of the Trust. WHO WE ARE LOOKING FORWe look to new Trustees who join our Board to maintain and continue to buildupon our capacity and diversity. We are a skills-based Board, with Trustees havingone or more identified skills, which are relevant to the nature of PHQ and our keyareas of operation. We are particularly looking for the following skills andexperience:Commercial property experience, either in surveying or lettings andcommercial property management.Financial management (at Finance Director level or above) incorporating astrong background in audit management and oversight.Gosport residents with experience of the local commercial, political or heritagelandscapes.We particularly welcome applications from individuals from a range ofbackgrounds and experiences as part of our commitment to broaden the diversityof our Board. Previous Trustee experience is not necessary. Trustees can expect to serve on at least one subcommittee that is relevantto their expertise and experience. Meetings are held within the working day toaccommodate staff attendees.All Trustees are expected to attend an annual strategy away day and may also be invited toother key operational, staff or volunteer events throughout the year, for which attendanceis encouraged, but optional.THE BENEFITSThe role of Trustee is voluntary. In recognition of the skills and experience our Trusteesbring, there is an annual remuneration of £1,000 (gross). Travel and other reasonableexpenses incurred may also be claimed.The role of Trustee is a rewarding one, where you will have the opportunity to bring tobear your expertise and experience for charitable benefit; supporting the conservation,development and modernisation of unique naval maritime sites and assets.
