Job overview

Duties will include providing a high standard of care following surgery, attending to aspects of patient personal hygiene, maintaining patient tissue integrity, recording of observations, liaising with the patient's families and the general public and supporting your colleagues in providing a positive experience for the patient pre and post operatively.

The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, with the ability to respond to different communication needs of patients. They will also work effectively as part of a team. High quality patient care should be at the forefront of your expertise.

It is an exciting time at the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital as maternity, neonatal, critical care and theatre services will be moving to the brand new Acute Services Block (ASB) and New Ward Block in October 2025.

Main duties of the job

To care for a variety of patients recovering from a variety of surgical procedures and escalate any concerns to your qualified nurse colleagues working in the Unit.

To assist the registered nurse in the delivery of patient care.

To collect patients from Pre-Op areas prior to surgery and assist in the transfer of post-op patients to wards or Discharge areas

To report any concerns to the registered nurse relating to standards of cleanliness, hazards and patient safety within the clinical area.

To ensure the registered nurse is regularly updated on patients’ condition and progress.

To ensure the equipment is clean and in good working order.

To ensure the environment is clean and tidy.

To participate with the induction of staff new to the clinical area.

To minimize hazards in the working area and report any identifiable hazards to the line manager. To adhere to all safe systems of work applicable to the work area.

To complete all documentation as necessary relating to patient care prior to surgery and within the Recovery Unit following surgery.

Use of trust IT systems including Nerve Centre, iPM, Evolve, ICE

To demonstrate effective communication, both orally and in writing, to ensure dissemination of information.

To maintain confidentiality at all times.

To promote awareness of adult and child protection issues

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • L3 Health and Social Care Qualification or equivalent experience (minimum 12 months)
  • Care Certificate Completion
Desirable criteria
  • Level 2 maths and English

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience in a healthcare role at Band 3 within Trust working in Surgery/Critical Care
  • Experience of communicating with people from different backgrounds
  • Experience of working under pressure and dealing with competing demands
  • Basic digital skills
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working in a trust ward setting
  • Experience of using digital systems in a healthcare setting

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology
  • Knowledge of care and related procedures, clinical observations, limited clinical duties and relevant legislation
  • An understanding of the fundamentals of patient care
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of hospitals policies/guidelines/ procedure
