We are looking to appoint a Director of Music and Performance who will oversee all aspects of performance in both our Pre-Prep and Prep departments. We are seeking to employ an individual who is able to build on the strong tradition of music in the school, form meaningful relationships with pupils, parents and colleagues and provide the very best for the children in our care. This post would suit an individual who has great energy and enthusiasm for music and performance, is a proactive team player, and is keen to inspire children through their love of music-making. Nick Hawker Head King’s St Alban’s Prep School Job description Nestled in the heart of Worcester and adjacent to the Senior School, King’s St Alban’s Prep School enjoys a tranquil location on the banks of the River Severn. Small in size, rich in possibility, and part of something much bigger, St Alban’s Prep is a school with rhythm, colour and care at its core. Through a plethora of both academic and co-curricular activities, we aim to inspire every child, build confidence and resilience, and encourage them to aim high. We are seeking outstanding candidates to fill the role of Director of Music and Performance, commencing September 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter. Co-curricular • To take a full and active role in the school’s co-curricular programme. • To co-ordinate the delivery of instrumental music tuition, in close association with the peripatetic music staff. • To co-ordinate concerts, both informal and formal, including liaising with the Cathedral regarding bookings for concerts and school services. • To take responsibility for the school’s ensemble groups, choir and orchestra. • To develop and maintain the school’s programme of activities in music, performance and the creative arts. Job description Pastoral • Actively promote and safeguard the wellbeing of all pupils, reporting any concerns in a timely manner. • Provide an equal balance of challenge and nurture to those children in your care. • Communicate and consult with parents, with transparency, tact and honesty. • Meet with parents to discuss pupil welfare and progress. • Flag any pastoral issues to the wider staff body and skillfully maintain a high degree of discretion. Professional Development • Attend CPD opportunities as organised by the School. • Participate in any arrangements for the appraisal of your performance and that of other teachers. • A willingness to self review and develop professionally whilst thinking creatively about how this may be done. All staff are expected to participate fully in the recruitment of new pupils, facilitating open events, taster days, tours and visits, as needed. There remains an expectation to participate in administrative and organisational tasks related to any of the duties outlined above. Person specification It is expected that the Director of Music and Performance will demonstrate a range of qualities, skills and experience, as outlined below. EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND QUALITIES REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED A good honours degree qualification. Qualified Teacher Status. Evidence of continuing professional development. A willingness to be trained in Emergency First Aid at Work (if not already). A willingness to drive a school minibus (D1 licence is not essential). Proven experience of working successfully with children across the primary age. A deep understanding of the value of breadth in a child’s education. Confident in the use of ICT when teaching. Proactively demonstrate a thorough understanding of, and commitment to, a teacher’s role in safeguarding children. Excellent written and verbal communication. A superb role model to both children and colleagues. Consistently push the boundaries of creative and imaginative lesson delivery to engage and inspire children. Hard-working, with drive and determination – dedicated and humble as part of a team, with a high degree of self-awareness. Display honesty, integrity and compassion. Ability to act sensitively and co-operatively with others. Ability to work independently and to take the initiative when needed, as well as an understanding of the benefits of teamwork. Willing and able to go the extra mile to build relationships with children, parents and staff. Ambitious for the children that you teach, setting and planning learning with high expectations for excellent outcomes. Committed to maintaining a positive attitude, with a sense of fun in all you do. An ability to play the piano to a high standard in order to accompany performances during concerts as required.
