Research Intern for the Americas Program
The Business & Human Rights Resource Centre is seeking an enthusiastic, reliable and well-organised Research Intern to work with our Americas team, including on day-to-day research on business and human rights in the Americas. This internship opportunity is for applicants currently enrolled at university and at the final years, and/or that should complete an internship as part of their studies, either studying law (LLB/LLM/JD or similar), political science or similar.
- Period: Minimum commitment of 14 hours a week, for a period of at least 6 months, starting ideally in late October or early November 2025.
- Location: This is a remote position in which the intern works from their home or university. Candidates must have at least 3.5 hours overlap within 8.30 am-6:00pm Bogota.

The Resource Centre’s Americas programme work closely with a variety of stakeholders in the Americas region to work towards eradicating abuse in business, with a particular emphasis on issues related to just transition, labour rights, corporate legal accountability and civic freedoms and human rights defenders. We seek to bring enhanced transparency to the conduct of business in the region; build and expand effective networks and interactions among groups that are interested in confronting the human rights impacts of business; strengthen local communities, NGOs, and human rights defenders, particularly indigenous peoples, afro-descendants, rural farmers and women, to engage with companies to improve human rights protections; promote improved labour conditions and living wages in the highest-risk sectors such as construction, mining, oil, gas and coal and agribusiness, and identify and addressing risks to the most vulnerable groups, including rural and migrant workers.
Your tasks
- Online research and inputs: find relevant news, commentaries, reports and court documents relating to just transition, human rights defenders, and labour rights in the Americas in relation to corporate abuse and good practices and legislative developments; compose abstracts and titles; create and update information on the website, including broken links.
- Supporting research for our Transition Minerals Tracker (TMT). Research on alleged human rights abuses related to mines in the Americas that are part of the TMT; draft summaries and create and update information on the website.
- Support Programme’s outputs: suggest key news items for our global Weekly Update (in English) and Americas Weekly Update (in Spanish).
- Participate in (virtual) meetings, including bi-weekly Americas team call and fortnightly Global Team meetings with all staff and Regional Researchers.
- Additional Tasks: You may also be asked to assist the Americas Programme with general tasks, such as supporting our company response mechanism; liaising with team members; revising translations; etc.
Please note that this internship is not academically oriented and does not involve extensive analysis or writing. Rather, it is a practical internship focused on bringing regional and global attention to company conduct affecting people and communities, with the aim of promoting respect for human rights.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Social science studies: Currently at the final years in university, either studying law (LLB/LLM/JD or similar) or with a legal background, political science or similar.
- Research and analytical skills:Ability to carry out general research, including online and to summarise information clearly and succinctly. Demonstrated academic or professional experience carrying out research and analysing information.
- Commitment to human rights:Interest in and commitment to promoting human rights.
- Data input capacity: Ability and willingness to do large amount of routine data input on a daily basis.
- Language skills:Excellent Spanish and English language skills (reading/writing/speaking). Portuguese is highly desirable (but not essential).
- Initiative:Ability to use own initiative and to work independently. Motivated by achieving results and completing tasks.
