Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver a high-quality Mandarin Chinese curriculum aligned with the Cambridge International languages curriculum, IGCSE and IB or A Level curriculum.
  • Teach Mandarin Chinese across a range of year groups, fostering students' linguistic skills and cultural awareness.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans, learning materials and assessments that cater to varying levels of language proficiency.
  • Regularly provide formative and summative assessments to monitor students' progress.

  • Implement differentiated teaching strategies to cater to students with varying levels of language proficiency, including native and non-native speakers.

  • Support students as a Form Tutor, contributing to their pastoral care and personal development.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Modern Foreign Languages Faculty to ensure curriculum continuity and cross-disciplinary learning opportunities.
  • Establish strong partnerships with parents, keeping them informed of their child’s progress and addressing any concerns.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities and share best practices in Mandarin language education.
  • Contribute to extracurricular activities such as Chinese language clubs, cultural festivals, calligraphy workshops, and study trips to Chinese-speaking regions.

Person Specification:

  • Essential Skills and Attributes:
  • Strong subject knowledge in Mandarin Chinese language and culture.
  • Experience teaching Mandarin (Foreign Language / Second Language / First Language) to students aged 11–18, including preparation for IGCSE and A Level/IB examinations.
  • A passion for language acquisition and the ability to inspire students to develop their Mandarin proficiency.
  • Proficiency in differentiated instruction to support both native and non-native speakers.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, fostering strong relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Ability to create an inclusive learning environment that supports diverse student needs, including EAL learners.
  • Commitment to cultural education and promoting cross-cultural understanding within the school community.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to balance multiple responsibilities effectively.

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Experience teaching in an international school setting.
  • Familiarity with concept-based, inquiry-based, or project-based learning approaches.
  • Experience developing curriculum frameworks or leading a team within a Language Department.
  • Enthusiasm for engaging students in extracurricular activities, such as cultural immersion trips, international language competitions, or Chinese debate clubs.
  • Knowledge of modern language learning technologies, such as online platforms, apps, and digital resources.
