About the Role
Kids Family Groups are relaxed and friendly sessions for families with children aged 0–5 with SEND (Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities). These groups provide a calm and supportive atmosphere where children can play, explore, and develop, while parents and carers have the opportunity to connect with others and better understand how their child plays and interacts.
As an Early Years Practitioner, you will work directly with young children with SEND and their families. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your professional skills in a meaningful role and experience a strong sense of personal achievement.
Role Overview
To deliver high-quality support and play opportunities for disabled children, their siblings, and their parents/carers attending Kids’ community groups throughout Birmingham.
This role will involve travel to the following areas:
Erdington, Sutton Coldfield, Perry Barr, Yardley, Hall Green, Edgbaston, Ladywood, Hodge Hill, Northfield, and Selly Oak.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop an engaging and inclusive environment where children can enjoy learning and make progress, in line with the EYFS framework, SEND Code of Practice, and Ofsted guidance.
- Support and empower parents/carers of children with SEND to build confidence and understanding in their role as their child’s primary educator.
- Observe and assess children’s learning and development, record their achievements, and plan future learning experiences based on individual needs.
- Provide a caring, stimulating space through weekly group sessions that focus on play, learning, and early development.
- Share best practices with colleagues to promote a well-motivated, collaborative, and professional team.
- Ensure risk assessments are followed and inform your manager of any identified risks.
- Build and maintain positive working relationships with external professionals and local agencies.
- Participate actively in training and professional development opportunities.
- Adhere to all Kids policies and procedures, including safeguarding, health and safety, data protection, and equality and diversity.
- Follow the Birmingham Safeguarding Children’s Board policies and procedures.
- Carry out any other duties appropriate to the role and level of responsibility.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working directly in an early years setting.
- Experience working with children with SEND and supporting their families.
- Knowledge and experience of working with children under 5 in an early years environment.
- Understanding of age-appropriate child development, with sensitivity to cultural differences.
- Empathy and a genuine desire to support families and children with additional needs.
- Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Competence in using Microsoft Office applications.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Experience of working in partnership with parents and within multi-agency settings.
- Good understanding of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
- Familiarity with the EYFS framework and Ofsted requirements.
- Awareness of equal opportunities and inclusive practice.
- Understanding of data protection responsibilities.
- Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
- Car driver essential due to travel requirements.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience planning and delivering activities tailored to young children with SEND.
- Experience working with children and families who have English as an additional language.
- Knowledge of support services available in Birmingham for families with children with SEND.
