VOLUNTEERING
AT CARLISLE CATHEDRAL

PRAYING CHERISHING TRANSFORMING

COME AND JOIN US

Many people know and love Carlisle
Cathedral. Our hope is that many more will
discover what an amazing place this is during
2022 – our 900th anniversary year.

We are recruiting new Volunteers to join us
as we welcome visitors from near and far.

Volunteers have always played a hugely important part in the life of
the Cathedral - and it easy to see that we could not do half of
what we want to do without them.

Do you think you could be the friendly face that welcomes a
visitor who has come to Carlisle for the first time? How about
being ‘front of house’ at one of our 900 anniversary events?
Would you like to help in the Cathedral shop where lots of items
are exclusively produced for sale here? Would you like to learn
more about the Cathedral so that you can guide people around
one of the most beautiful buildings in Cumbria? Is a behind-the-
scenes role more to your liking – there are plenty of opportunities
for those too.

Training is offered for each and every volunteer role – and we
make the recruitment process as easy as we can while keeping the
Cathedral a safe space for everyone who visits or helps here.

We would love to hear from you if you want to find out more.
Contact details are in this leaflet. Why not come and see?
Together we can make 2022 a special year for the people of
Carlisle and Cumbria and our visitors.

VOLUNTEERING AT CARLISLE CATHEDRAL

Volunteers are vital to the Cathedral and to its future.
We are very proud of our dedicated team and the time
they give us. Our volunteers come from all backgrounds
and interests and derive great satisfaction from being
involved in the life of the Cathedral.

ABOUT THE CATHEDRAL

Carlisle Cathedral stands at the
heart of the City. Founded in 1122
by Henry I, the Cathedral is one of
the oldest and best-known buildings
in Carlisle. It is a key heritage asset
and landmark within the City’s

'Historic Quarter’.The great monastery in Carlisle was
dissolved on 9 January 1540 and the new foundation, the
Cathedral Church of the Holy and Undivided Trinity,
came into being in 1541.

Carlisle Cathedral is an everyday church, offering almost
1300 services every year. We are open and active every
day of the year and we welcome over 150,000 visitors,
worshippers and pilgrims per annum. Our team of over
100 volunteers support all aspects of the Cathedral’s day
to day operation.

IS VOLUNTEERING FOR YOU?

Our volunteers are here to help our
visitors get the best from their time at
the Cathedral. If you have a friendly
disposition and are happy to chat to
people from all walks of life and from
all over the world this could be the role
for you. See the different volunteer
roles on the following pages:

WELCOME VOLUNTEER

As a Welcome Volunteer you would be all visitors first point of
contact when entering the Cathedral.

Our Welcome Team are here to meet and greet our visitors and
to help with enquiries and information to help visitors get the
most from their time with us.

"I work alongside a great team of
helpers and it gives us all immense
satisfaction to volunteer and be part
of this magnificent buildings history. It
is really interesting to meet visitors
from all over the world and to see
their enjoyment of their visit here to
the Cathedral."

GUIDE VOLUNTEER

Guides bring the history of the Cathedral alive for its many
visitors. Six weeks of training, consisting of one session per week,
is followed by a period of working alongside an experienced guide.

"My day at the Cathedral is the best
day of the week. How could you fail
to be impressed by this magnificent
building? Bringing the history alive for
visitors is most rewarding as it makes
them feel welcome and at home in
this wonderful and peaceful House of
God."

JIM - GUIDE VOLUNTEER

GIFT SHOP VOLUNTEER

Gift Shop volunteers are located in the Gift Shop just inside the
Cathedral, welcoming visitors, pointing out where they can find
further information about the Cathedral and encouraging visitors
to buy a Guidebook or a special memento of their visit from our
retail selection.

"It's amazing the people you meet
from all over the world, volunteering
here at the Cathedral. We often
surprise our visitors with the range
we offer. It is very fulfilling to help
visitors explore this beautiful building
and feel I am contributing to the

ETHOS

The Cathedral exists to proclaim the Christian faith. We ask that
our volunteers have an understanding of and sympathy with the
Cathedral’s overall mission. It is important that everyone who
works or volunteers here understands the importance of
remaining sensitive to the Cathedral’s primary purpose as a place
of worship, whilst generating the visitor income we rely on to
support the ministry of the Cathedral.

SAFEGUARDING & SAFER RECRUITMENT

The Cathedral is committed to safeguarding children, young
people, vulnerable adults, and all who come into our care. As part
of this we ask that everyone who works and volunteers at the
Cathedral undertakes a safer recruitment process which is
commensurate with the nature and form of the role. In all cases
this will require you to be aware of and comply with the Cathedral
Safeguarding Policy, the completion of a safeguarding declaration
and to complete some level of basic safeguarding training.
