The Careers and Student Opportunities department is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Careers Consultant to join our team, delivering high quality careers and employability services to students individually and within curriculum.

The Role:
 This is an important role contributing to “Develop Talent for Tomorrow” a designated pillar within the university’s 2030 strategy. You will support the Careers Manager in delivering services and initiatives to improve our student’s employability and graduate outcomes. You will take a consultative approach to working with academics to embed careers and employability and ensure alignment to the employability strategy and framework. You will develop and deliver work-based learning and authentic assessment opportunities within the curriculum, ensuring that our students are well-equipped for successful careers in a rapidly changing global economy. You will provide information, advice and guidance through one-to-one interventions with students. BCU has a diverse student population, and you will have experience of developing and delivering initiatives to improve positive graduate outcomes for all.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Embedded delivery integration: Support initiatives to enhance student learning by developing careers education, placement and work-based learning opportunities, through collaboration with academics
  • Guidance and coaching: Provide confidential careers management information, advice and coaching to students and graduates.
  • Leadership: Line manage Careers Coach(es) and delegate workloads to support delivery.
  • Strategy implementation:Support academics in developing and delivering integrated delivery that aligns to the university employability strategy and framework, ensuring alignment with the university's 2030 strategic goals.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience of providing careers consultancy and coaching interventions within a professional setting, ideally within a higher education environment.
  • Experience of developing and delivering new initiatives and embedding employability within the curriculum, for example work based learning, live briefs and incorporating authentic assessment etc.
  • Experience of motivating and inspiring colleagues to deliver results.
  • Excellent understanding of the graduate employability landscape and labour market.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to develop and maintain partnerships with academic staff, professional services colleagues, employers, and industry bodies.
  • Experience of evaluating and measuring impact.
  • A creative, proactive, solution-oriented mindset with a passion for improving student outcomes and enhancing employability opportunities.

The appointed candidate will normally be employed through our subsidiary company BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. Appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the LGPS scheme will be able to do so and will be employed by Birmingham City University directly.
