  • Amgueddfa Cymru has over 5.3 million items in its collection including Art, History and Archaeology and natural Sciences. These are spread across our seven museum sites and the National Collections Centre in Nantgarw. The national collection is a resource for the people of Wales, to be explored and enjoyed at our museums and at other museums and community settings across the country.


    We have recently developed a new Collections Development Strategy in consultation with the Welsh Museums Federation, and this strategy will inform our approach to new and existing collections and their management and care.
    Main Purpose of job
    The Senior Social History Conservator will have specialist expertise in the care and conservation of obects and collections which represent the lived experiences of the people of Wales. You should be willing and able to expand your knowledge in your field through research and training and have an ability to communicate your skills and knowledge to a wide audience. The Senior Social History Conservator will provide day-to-day care of the social history collections at St Fagans. You will also provide support to colleagues across departments and the other Amgueddfa Cymru sites to enable collections to be used in public programmes.

    Based in St Fagans, you will be required to conserve our collections, both on display and in store, as part of an interdisciplinary team of conservators.

    The types of objects, materials and collections you will focus your remedial work on are:


    • Domestic collections reflecting, the history, culture and ornamentation of the home. This includes ceramics, earthern ware, glassware and metals
    • Ethnographic collections, reflecting society, religion and beliefs. This includes items with ethical considerations such as mourning jewellery.

    You will be involved with activity to enable:


    • delivery of the museum’s wide-ranging public programme of loans, events and exhibitions across all sites, and beyond the walls of the museum
    • supporting the delivery of priority collecting initiatives including undertaking condition impact assessments, making the best use of conservation resources, planning programmes of treatment and long-term care and developing storage / display solutions.
    • the holistic care and conservation of the museum’s collection of social history objects.

    Your base will be at St Fagans National Museum of History in Cardiff but you may be required to work at other sites.
