Church Buildings Coordinator
Church Buildings Coordinator
Hours: 21 hours per week (0.6 FTE)
Salary: £30,090 (FT) at £18,054 pro rata (0.6 FTE)
Location: The Diocesan Office at Stoke Gifford, Bristol
Duties:
A diverse role providing a key role in supporting effective mission and ministry across the Diocese by helping churches care for, adapt, and use their buildings well.
No two days are the same. Working as part of the Church Buildings Team and closely with the Church Buildings Officer & Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) Secretary, including other colleagues across the Diocese, this core role will help deliver the work of the DAC and Church Buildings Team. Often the first point of contact, you will help provide guidance, advice and support to parishes, Archdeacons, and others on the care of church buildings, church contents, and churchyards. You will also provide key administrative functions to support this work and that of the team on a range of matters.
The Organisation:
The Diocese of Bristol is the administrative area of the Church of England that covers the cities of Bristol and Swindon and the rural parishes of adjacent North Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire. There are more than 200 churches in the Diocese, led by hundreds of clergy, and around 15,000 children and young people attend our 71 church schools. In many ways the best description is that the Diocese is a family of the 30,000 or so Clergy, Staff, Parish Officers and Church attenders who work together with a common goal.
The Church Buildings Coordinator is part of the Church Buildings Team of the Property and Estates Directorate. This is one of the Directorates that makes up the Diocesan Board of Finance (DBF) – the Charity that provides support services across the Diocese (see Diocese of Bristol). The Directorate and the DBF alike are a small and friendly community of likeminded professionals working from a modern office in Bradley Stoke, North Bristol, close to the M4 / M32 Junction. This role is based here but will be expected to travel occasionally across the diocese (own car must be provided, although travel expenses are reimbursed).
About You:
You are highly organised, reliable and motivated, with a genuine interest in church buildings and how they serve local communities. You enjoy working with a wide range of people and are able to respond sensitively and professionally to sometimes complex or competing needs.
You are comfortable managing multiple tasks and processes at once, can work to deadlines, and take pride in clear, accurate and well-presented information. You are equally happy working independently and as part of a team are willing to take direction while also using your initiative.
You are supportive of the charitable aims of the Diocese and the promotion of the Christian faith through the local church and are committed to good practice in safeguarding. You do not need to be a practicing Christian to apply to this role, but you should be comfortable in working closely with a faith community and in interacting directly with members of the clergy and their families.
Desired Skills and Experience:
A desirable candidate will have strong administrative and coordination experience, including supporting committees or work programmes. They would be an excellent and sensitive communicator (written and verbal), with experience of working with a range of stakeholders, including volunteers. Also, would have excellent organisational and time management skills, confidence in using Microsoft Office and in learning new systems, and an ability to analyse and interpret data (numerical and written).
Whilst a genuine interest in church buildings is essential, an understanding of historic buildings, maintenance or repair is desirable but not essential. Similarly, knowledge of the Church of England and its structures, familiarity with ecclesiastical or heritage legislation, and experience of reading and interpreting legislation is desirable but not essential.
We Also Offer

- 28 days annual leave (plus bank holidays)
- A contributory pension scheme and life assurance
- A Health Cash Plan
- Company sick pay

- A warm, supportive and values‑led team
