Assistant Chaplain (Dean's Clerk)

Jesus College is seeking to appoint an Assistant Chaplain (‘Dean’s Clerk’) to join in the life of the Chapel and assist the Dean of Chapel in pastoral duties for an average of 20 hours a week during University term, and 10 hours a week outside term. The College seeks to appoint an ordained priest in good standing in the Church of England or other church in full communion with the Church of England, or a lay person who has been selected by their bishop to train for ordained ministry in the Church of England.

Duties include: officiating at weekly services, occasional preaching, assisting with the organisation and care of the student Chapel team, and developing Chapel events and discussions; providing a pastoral presence, to those of any faith and none, around College and at events, especially toward postgraduates, staff and the choir community; supporting the College’s developing work in interfaith provision and wellbeing resources and initiatives.

The position begins at the start of January 2026, for Lent Term, initially for a period of two year but with the possibility of a one-year extension thereafter, and the post-holder would receive a pro-rata salary, based on 20 hours per week in term and 10 hours per week outside term, at the Diocese of Ely’s stipendiary rate for assistant curates (currently £30,110 per annum FTE). The College does not provide accommodation for the role, but the postholder will receive a housing allowance of £3,699 per annum. The post is ideally suited for someone looking for flexible part-time work, opportunities for professional development within university chaplaincy, or experience within which to expand their vocational training.

Interested applicants should submit a CV giving the names of three referees, one of whom should be either the candidate’s bishop (where the applicant is ordained) or their parish priest (where the applicant is not yet ordained), to jobs@jesus.cam.ac.uk by Tuesday 23rd September 2025. Interviews are anticipated to occur at the beginning of October.

Interested applicants should also write a cover letter indicating why they are attracted to the post as well as what they would bring to the role and hope to gain from it. If available, interested applicants should also include an example of a recent sermon they have preached.

The Dean of Chapel, the Rev’d James Crockford, is happy to speak informally with any candidate wishing to discuss the role (dean-of-chapel@jesus.cam.ac.uk, +1223 339433).
