Job Summary

As a Volunteering Officer at IWM, you’ll play a vital role in delivering high-quality, enjoyable, and impactful volunteer engagement across our sites. You’ll lead and support a team of passionate volunteers, ensuring smooth and safe operations both Front of House and Back of House. Your work will contribute directly to creating positive experiences for volunteers, visitors, and the wider IWM community.

This is a dynamic, people-focused role requiring strong coordination, communication, and leadership skills. You’ll be a visible champion of volunteering, helping to embed a positive volunteer ethos across the organisation.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Leading and Motivating Volunteers: Inspire and guide volunteers to help amplify IWM’s impact.
  • Daily Coordination: Organise rotas, conduct briefings, assign duties, and ensure welfare checks.
  • Training and Support: Deliver elements of the volunteer training programme and ensure volunteers are inducted, prepared, and supported throughout their journey.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with teams across Visitor Experience, Learning & Engagement, Membership, Conservation, Digital, and Curatorial.
  • Volunteer Recruitment and Retention: Support campaigns and selection processes to build a committed and valued volunteer team.
  • Database Management: Use Better Impact software to manage rotas and report on volunteer activity.
  • Income Generation: Promote IWM’s products and services, including membership, shops, cafes, and events.
  • Maintaining Standards: Ensure compliance with health and safety, uphold IWM values, and act as an ambassador for the museum.

This role requires flexibility, including weekend, evening, and public holiday work, and may involve travel across IWM sites.

Who We Are Looking For

  • Experience working with the public or in a customer-facing role, ideally in heritage or tourism.
  • Knowledge and experience of working with volunteers.
  • Minimum GCSEs (or equivalent) Grade A–C in Maths and English.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to motivate and build rapport with diverse individuals.
  • Confident in presenting information to varied audiences.
  • Experience managing or leading volunteer programmes.
  • Familiarity with Better Impact or similar volunteer management software.
  • Interest in 20th Century history.
  • Knowledge of one or more foreign languages.
