As a Casual Trading Assistant, you'll be at the heart of the visitor experience, providing a warm welcome, serving customers in our shop and cafe, sharing information about the site and wildlife, and helping visitors discover ways to support WWT through memberships, adoptions and purchases. You'll also help maintain attractive displays, replenish stock, operate tills, handle cash, and ensure high standards of customer service, food safety and presentation across our trading areas.
This is a varied and rewarding role where no two days are the same. One moment you could be serving coffee, the next helping a family plan their visit, promoting a new retail range, or sharing an inspiring conservation story. You'll work as part of a supportive team, meet people from all walks of life, develop valuable customer service and retail skills, and play an active role in helping visitors connect with nature.
Most importantly, every sale, membership and positive visitor experience helps generate income that supports WWT's mission to restore wetlands and unlock their power. By inspiring visitors and encouraging their support, you'll help us create a world where healthy wetlands benefit wildlife, people and the planet.
This is a casual position where hours are offered on an ad hoc basis. Candidates will need to be willing to work some weekends, bank holidays and during the school holidays.
We're looking for enthusiastic, customer-focused individuals who enjoy working with people and are passionate about delivering great visitor experiences.
Key requirements:
- Excellent customer service and communication skills – confident engaging with visitors, providing information, responding to enquiries and creating a welcoming atmosphere.
- A positive, proactive team player – willing to support colleagues across retail, catering and admissions, adapt to changing priorities and contribute to a busy visitor environment.
- Commercial awareness and attention to detail – able to promote products, memberships and visitor experiences, handle cash accurately and maintain high standards of presentation and merchandising.
- An interest in nature and conservation – keen to learn about WWT, our wetlands and wildlife, and share our conservation stories with visitors.
Desirable:
- Previous experience in retail, catering, hospitality or a customer-facing role.
- Experience using tills or EPOS systems and handling cash.
- Food Hygiene Level 2 or similar customer service/hospitality qualifications
