Job Purpose
To support the health and welfare of students.
The job description may be amended as any time following discussion between the manager and member of staff, and will be reviewed annually.
Providing welfare and personal care:
- Check, administer and record medications with the support of an additional member of staff who will act as a second checker.
- Assist with the development and implementation of risk assessments, personal health care plans and MAR sheets.
- Support learners consistently whilst following their care plans and provide individual personal care to meet their needs.
- Provide support, care and management for learners with additional needs such as the use of peg feed and cough assist.
- Respond to first aid requests, care for unwell or injured learners referring them when necessary to hospital or other health care providers e.g. walk in centre.
- Be responsible for replenishing supplies for PPE, period products and first aid boxes.
- Assist learners with mobility equipment such as wheelchairs, walking frames and hoists to support students in their learning environment.
- Participate in comprehensive assessment of learners needs to determine those who require specific support.
- Establish productive working relationships with learners and carers and take the lead on managing visits from external agencies such as physiotherapists, speech and language and occupational therapy.
- Challenge and motivate learners in the learning environment to promote independence, self-reliance, inclusion, acceptance and equality of access to learning opportunities for all learners.
- Encourage learners to interact and work co-operatively with others and engage in activities
Support for College:
- Lead in the development, implementation and monitoring of systems relating to medication procedures e.g. signing medication in and out, recording of any medication administered and stock control.
- Ensure the personal care room is always kept in a clean and orderly manner in accordance with the college’s Health and Safety regulations.
- Liase sensitively and effectively with parents/carers and participate in feedback sessions/meetings as directed.
- Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures related to safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, GDPR, confidentiality and disclosure, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
- Be aware of and support difference and ensure all learners have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
- Contribute to the overall ethos, vision and mission, values and beliefs of the college.
- Establish positive and constructive working relationships with learners, parents/carers, colleagues and other professionals, to communicate internally and externally on learners’ progress and maximize learner development.
- Participate in training and other learning experiences as required and directed.
- Recognise and evidence own strength and areas of expertise and use them to advise and support others.
- Contribute to team development activities and assist in the supervision, training and development of less experienced colleagues to support the achievement of individual and team performance and development objective
- Assist with the supervision of learners out of lesson time e.g. at lunchtimes, to enhance service delivery and encourage learner engagement.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
This job description is an outline of the main duties of the post. The post holder will be required to undertake other activities related to achieving the organisations objectives, as determined by the line manager with the ongoing development of the organisation.
- Medication procedures will only be administered once a member of staff is fully trained and signed off by a health professional as being competent in identified medical procedures.
Medication procedures may include:
- Administering medicines including and not limited to emergency medication for prolonged seizures and/or other life- threatening conditions i.e. Buccal, Inhalers, Epi-pen
- Providing support, care and management of learners with gastronomy feeding
Additional responsibilities:
- When not required to carry out Health Care Assistant duties, a requirement of this role may require you to support learners in another area of the college.
