SALARY: £26,000.00 - £28,000.00 per annum (dependent upon experience)

BACKGROUND TO GLMCC:

Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre is a leading UK mosque situated in the heart of Birmingham serving
the community since 1979. Operating from its award-winning grade II listed Victorian building, GLMCC fulfils its
mission of inspiring, educating and serving through its educational college, outreach work, welfare services,
youth work, international humanitarian wing, as well as its fully functional mosque which is attended by thousands
every week

1.  PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre, in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, is
delivering a three-year project to support Muslims living with cancer in Birmingham. This role
combines the responsibilities of a Male Cancer Support Worker and a Volunteer Coordinator to
provide culturally sensitive emotional and practical support to male cancer patients and their
carers, while also recruiting, training, and managing a network of male volunteer Cancer
Champions.

The post holder will play a dual role:

−  Support Worker: Providing direct support to male cancer patients and their families, helping
them navigate the health and social care system, and promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
−  Volunteer Coordinator: Building and managing a team of trained male volunteer Cancer
Champions to raise awareness, promote cancer prevention, and support community
engagement.

2.  MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE ROLE

Cancer Support Responsibilities:

•  Provide telephone and face-to-face support to male cancer patients and their carers, offering

emotional and practical assistance.

•  Signpost individuals to internal and external support services, ensuring they receive the help

they need.

•  Act as an advocate to resolve issues that may act as barriers to care, facilitating access to

health services.

•  Make pre-planned telephone calls to assess ongoing needs and identify changes in

circumstances, responding appropriately.

•  Encourage and support healthy lifestyle choices and self-management where appropriate.
•  Recognise and respond to sudden or acute matters of concern, escalating to emergency

services if necessary.

•  Conduct home visits, where required, to provide tailored support.

•  Capture sensitive data and maintain accurate records of interactions with service users,

adhering to GDPR regulations.

•  Document and monitor all aspects of support and service delivery, contributing to data

collection for audit and evaluation purposes.

Volunteer Coordination Responsibilities:

•  Recruit, train, and manage a network of male volunteer Cancer Champions, targeting

population groups with the highest cancer risks.

•  Develop and deliver a comprehensive training programme for Cancer Champions, equipping

them with the knowledge and skills to support their communities.

•  Build and maintain relationships with public, private, and third-sector organisations to support

volunteer recruitment and project delivery.

•  Promote the Cancer Champions project through community networks, events, and

partnerships.

•  Provide ongoing support and supervision to volunteers, ensuring they are well-resourced and

equipped to carry out their roles.

•  Organise and support additional activities and events planned by volunteers.
•  Capture feedback from Cancer Champions to improve understanding of community needs

and enhance project outcomes.

•  Collect and report data for project monitoring and evaluation, as required by Macmillan and

GLMCC.
